Runners in the Last Annual Vol State Road Race seek refuge at the aid station in the McKenzie farmers market. 129 participants began the 500k ultramarathon Thursday morning across the Mississippi River in Missouri and have ten days to reach the finish line in Georgia, just across the state line.

Carroll County Library children's librarian Grace Hawkins reads to summer readers about Smokey Bear.
Smokey himself was scheduled to appear but was unable. The kids still had a great time learning about fire safety and wildfire prevention and making Smokey crafts.
Hawkins told The Banner she hopes to reschedule Smokey to visit the library soon.
