123% higher risk of death. That's what the combination of belly fat and low vitamin D was associated with in a new study of 5,500+ adults over 50.

Published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, the ELSA cohort analysis followed participants for about 6 years. Abdominal obesity alone: 47% higher mortality risk. Vitamin D deficiency alone: up to 91% higher. Both together: hazard ratio 2.23 — more than double.

Why might they compound? Adipose tissue sequesters vitamin D, so the more belly fat you carry, the less vitamin D reaches your circulation. Meanwhile visceral fat drives the chronic inflammation and insulin resistance that sit upstream of nearly every chronic disease.

This is observational — it shows association, not causation, and can't prove that fixing vitamin D levels lowers risk. But checking both your waist and your 25(OH)D level is cheap and actionable.

The more we learn about chronic disease, the harder it becomes to ignore metabolic health.

We spend so much time treating diseases as separate problems, each with its own specialist, medication, and diagnosis. But underneath many of them, the same metabolic dysfunction keeps showing up.

Maybe the better question isn't always, “How do we treat this disease?”

Maybe it's also, “What is driving it?”

Insulin resistance deserves a much bigger place in that conversation.

I'm super excited that Healing Humanity has finally made it to Dallas!

I've met the filmmakers twice over the past year and have been eagerly waiting for the finished film.

This isn't just a documentary about food. It's a message of hope for people who feel stuck, frustrated, or out of options. The mission is simple: help people understand that they may have more influence over their health than they've been led to believe.
