King William man killed in explosion in Mechanicsville

Contributed Report
Hanover Fire-EMS responded to an explosion today in Mechanicsville that killed a 21-year-old King William man.
At 5:08 p.m., Hanover Fire-EMS crews were called to the 6000 block of Billingswood Drive in Mechanicsville for a reported explosion with possible injuries. Upon arrival, crews found Bryson Lewis of King William dead as a result of injuries sustained in the event.
Investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Hanover County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the night. It has been determined that the incident was a result of flammable vapors being ignited while the top of a 55-gallon drum was being removed with cutting tools. During the course of the investigation, no other parties were found to be injured in the incident, nor any damage to property.
Hanover Fire-EMS extended its deepest sympathy to the family and those affected by this tragic incident.
Hanover Fire-EMS’ Office of the Fire Marshal would ask that all citizens use extreme caution when working with containers that previously held flammable or combustible contents. Extra precautions should be used, such as filling the container with water or other efforts to suppress any remaining vapors prior to the use of tools that could create an ignition source.
Hanover Fire-EMS also extended thanks to Hanover sheriff David R. Hines and his staff for their assistance in the investigation.
Submitted by Hanover Fire-EMS Battalion Chief and public information officer Gregory R. Martin.

State police urge motorists to use caution with additional impending winter weather coming

Contributed Report
With the National Weather Service calling for another significant round of winter weather making its way across Virginia Thursday night (Jan. 6) into Friday morning (Jan. 7), the Virginia State Police are encouraging Virginians to be weather aware...to plan ahead...and to avoid traveling during inclement conditions.

During the significant winter weather event earlier this week, from 12:01 a.m. Monday (Jan. 3) through midnight Tuesday (Jan.4), VSP troopers responded to 1,220 traffic crashes and 1,414 disabled/stuck vehicles statewide. There were no weather-related traffic deaths reported during that time period...to include the Interstate 95 incident near Fredericksburg.

"Back-to-back storms are nothing new for the state police or Virginia," said Major R.C. Maxey, Jr., Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations Deputy Director, during a press conference held Thursday morning. "State Police is prepared for this latest round of winter weather. We will have all available troopers on patrol in order to respond as quickly as possible to traffic crashes, emergencies, and disabled motorists. We will extend shifts, call out additional troopers, and redirect resources when and where needed, just as we did earlier this week."

If you must travel during the storm, please take these safety tips into consideration:
- Know Before You Go! Before heading out, check Virginia road conditions at www.511virginia.org or download the VDOT 511 app. Do not call 911 or #77 for road conditions. Please leave these emergency lines open for emergencies only.
- Clear ALL snow and ice from the roof, trunk, hood and windows of your vehicle - car, SUV, minivan, pickup truck, commercial vehicle - before you travel.
- Use your headlights - in rain and snow. Virginia law requires headlights on when your wipers are active.
- Drive for conditions - slow your speed and increase your traveling distance between the vehicle ahead of you.
- Always buckle up.
- Avoid distractions - put down the phone.

Corinne N. Geller, Public Relations Director for the Virginia State Police, just sent out the following information:

As snow, sleet and rain continue to fall across various regions of Virginia today, Virginia State Police troopers continue to respond to traffic crashes and disabled vehicles caused by motorists driving too fast for conditions. State police is still asking people to avoid driving, unless absolutely unnecessary. The drive is not worth the risk of a crash, getting stuck, injury to your/passenger, or the cost of a repair.

State police have responded to 313 traffic crashes and aided 277 disabled/stuck motorists since 12:01 a.m. Monday (Jan. 3) through 10:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 3). The majority of those crashes have involved only damage to vehicles. There have been no reported fatalities at this time.

As of 10:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 3), state police are currently responding to 137 traffic crashes and 119 disabled/stuck vehicles across the state.

State police is still on the scene of a jackknifed tractor-trailer blocking the westbound lanes on Interstate 64 at the 168 mile marker in Goochland County. There were no injuries and the tractor-trailer is hauling 18,000 lbs of plastic furniture.
