THE NATIONAL NEWS STORY THAT PUT ‘WAVE’ ON A ROCKET RIDE

As we start beating drums for the long-awaited sequel to Wil’s bestselling and award-winning novel ‘Wave’---and we really do have some fantastic things brewing---we thought we’d take a quick trip back in time to that crazy summer of 2005. There were factors working against ‘Wave’ that made any kind of hope for success seem futile at best. First, there was absolutely no marketing budget; not one cent. Then, the company that was due to handle the book’s distribution (Koen) declared bankruptcy about a week before the release date. The publisher literally had one person on a telephone begging bookstores to stock it, then putting copies into boxes and mailing them straight out of the building.

All things considered, there was no reason to expect ‘Wave’ to do anything other than die a quick death and fade into oblivion. Instead, it sold through its first printing in a matter of weeks, won the New Jersey Notable Book Award, and was picked up in eBook and paperback by publishing monolith Macmillan in NYC.
