In honor of all of our previous additions being added to our online website, we interviewed former writers and board members! Megan Houchin helped to found The Palmier, bringing her vision to life with the first ever The Palmier edition: On Coffee.
“My favorite spread from the Coffee Edition would have to be “Looking for Love? Try Looking in Your Cup” by Francesa Guthrie. I do not think I will ever forget how I felt after reading “We need two more pages” as it appeared on my phone. Reading these words, I realized the months of work we had invested in creating the first printed copy of The Palmier were in jeopardy. As co-founder of the club, I, along with the sixty club members, developed our first in-print edition focusing on coffee. We had 18 pages of content covering everything from the history of the first American coffee break to how to make the most scrumptious cinnamon streusel coffee cake. We sent everything to be printed and excitedly waited to get our first printed magazine in our hands. Unfortunately, it turned out we needed 20 pages of content in order to be printed, not 18.
So after realizing our error, I took a deep breath and immediately jumped into problem-solving mode. I proposed we use one of the articles we decided not to include in this edition because we wanted our articles to be more research-focused rather than personal narratives. Looking at the magazine now, I knew this was the personal touch it was missing. Working with the Layout Head, Mary-Joy Sidhom, and my Co-Head, Holden Dahlerbruch; moving pictures, graphics, and changing fonts, we whipped up a beautifully laid out 2-page spread. This spread would not be as fun and beautiful to look at without them.
All of The Palmier members were proud to bring home to our families for the holidays not only the printed copies of the first edition but also the stories of our friendship and time together creating the magazine. All in all, even though sometimes it gets messy or someone adds too much sugar, I am so happy to lead this unique, fun-loving community of people.” ☕️
