Ghaaa!!!... deadlines suck! Especially when you set them for yourself and your broken body fails to cooperate so you can make the deadline. I set myself a deadline for getting my children's book published to Amazon for Black Friday this year. Well that is 48 hours away and I still finalizing the last 3 illustrations. These illustrations are turning out fantastic but the amount of time it takes for each one is crazy. So now the deadline has been bumped to December 1st. And I will make it even if I have to melt down my digital tablet that I use to create my illustrations from 24/7 use to get it done. Now back to work.

I have been diligently working on completing the illustrations for my children's book. Thus far I have completed 8 illustrations of the probable 14 illustrations which I plan to enclude in the book. The simpler ones take on average 15 hours to complete but the more detailed ones, like this are averaging 40+ hours and upwards of 25 layers for each. The hair detail is by far the most difficult piece of each illustration with upwards of a third to half of the total illustration creation time being spend on just the hair. This particular image took 43 hours to create and 27 total layers. The dog alone took 8 layers and roughly 16 hours to complete. Enjoy this new illustration. I know it has been awhile since I have posted an update and I wanted to assure each og you that I haven't forgotten about you and am still hard at work towards publishing at least two books this year. The writing is already done it is the far greater time consuming than expected illustrations which are causing the delay.

TEASER ALERT!!!

Title: The Devil Wears a Cross (Buck Silverman #2)
Genre: Western

The blast of both barrels of a sawed off shotgun ripped through the edge of the table top and the table cloth that covered it. Buck grabbed for his gun in the same instant one slug slammed into him cutting a deep groove through the outer muscle of his right arm, turning him almost completely around and sending his gun sliding across the floor towards the door through which he had just entered. The second slug ricocheted off the side of his skull sending him reeling, almost unconscious, to the floor. Buck lay there in a spinning haze. His vision was blurry at best and his whole body felt like it was nailed down to the floor. His mind raced frantically through the darkening haze. He wanted to move, needed to move, but his body would not respond. "Well, that was easier than I thought it would be," said Ash rising from the table and moving towards Buck's lifeless body. "But just to be certain there are no lose ends I am going to finish the job," he continued, drawing a large knife from beneath his black coat.

TEASER ALERT!!!!
Title: Two of a Kind (Buck Silverman #1)
Genre: Western

He was perplexed at the weight of the gun in his hand. He didn't remember drawing it from the holster that hung tied down on his thigh. The echo of the gunshot hung as heavy in the room as the emptiness in his gut. He looked down at the growing puddle of blood seeping out from under the body on the floor. The room was as still as the man who lay dead not ten feet from the tips of his dusty boots. This dead man had been a gunslinger, or so was the word about town, now he was just another body to fertilize the ground up on boot hill. There would be trouble though; the bullet pierced tin star on the dead man's chest would make sure of that. "Marshal" was all it said but that one word carried the weight of hanging and that was a prospect that made his stomach turn even worse the more he considered it.

Time to call it a night. Cover art for my short story "The Devil Wears a Cross" (Story #2 in the Buck Silverman series I am writing) is done. Today's goal accomplished!

07/20/2016

Attempt #2 will be made shortly.

I decided to work on some final edits and revisions using my tablet yesterday instead of the old laptop. After 4 hours of hard work I had the final revisions on the first short story I am planning to release this month halfway done. I had saved my work every 30 minutes to both my cloud storage and locally knowing the tablet doesn't have an auto save feature like my laptop. After 4 hours I decided my headache and neck pain was sufficient to warrant a stop for the day. I saved everything one final time and closed up the apps. Then I remembered a detail I was going to add and decided to do so before I shut everything down. I opened my document to discover that NONE of my work had actually saved despite the app I was using confirming the saves to both locations repeatedly. Ever have one of those days where everything just makes you wonder what you did to p**s off the universe? So with throbbing, photosensitive headache still blurring my vision and making it difficult to do anything I again shall attempt to accomplish my goal, this time on the laptop, as I am determined to release at least one of my short stories by the end of this month, hopefully by the end of this week if the technology will cooperate. :-)

Well... I thought I had on 4 to 6 pages left to finish the short story presently in progress. Key word here is thought. Almost three pages in to my writing binge today and I did NOT like the way things were moving toward the closure. Thus after an hours attempt at a rework of my three pages with minimal if any improvement I round filed my four hours work and started over. After another 2 hours work a new almost three pages was produced much more to my likeing. However, since the newly produced pages add aditional characters and plot line towards my roughed out ending I STILL have at least another 6 pages left to finish this one. Ugh... oh the joys of being a writer. :-)

(Sadly 5 years ago 99 words per minute at 99% accuracy was easy. Now I am lucky to get 20 wpm with 60% accuracy due to the damage in my neck. So what originally would have been maybe 2 hours work total now takes at least 3 times longer. But since no one can tell these tales but me I continue to make my fingers dance upon the keys. Besides I am as anxious to know the ending as you are because in all honestly I don't truly know what is going to come through my fingers onto the page until the final key is struck.)

The children's Christmas story which I have been working on is finished as far as writing the story is concerned. Now I am trying my hand at doing the illustrations. I am still learning the software I am using and have never worked in a strictly digital medium or format before so there is a definite learning curve to this endeavor. However, I am slowly getting the hang of it. Here are a few samples of what I have been working on. A few are complete while some are very near completion with only some minor modifications and/or touch ups left to complete. Enjoy.

Well I've discovered that letting my thoughts percolate for a few weeks on illustrations for my Christmas children's book I have been working to finish up and publish shortly has been very productive. Sitting in front of the Christmas tree and listening to Christmas music while I sketch is definitely setting a proper mood for these illustrations. The creative juices are flowing like a flash flood but sadly I have to limit my sketch time to about an hour or so a day. I am going to keep at it though as I can with a goal of getting this book out before Christmas.

For those of you that don't know I suffered a severe neck injury a few years back along with other injuries in a car accident. The damage in my neck greatly affects my hands and most of my upper torso and face. It limits me greatly and causes me issues with my hands among other things. Thus after about an hour of looking down and sketching I get a horrendous headache and lose feeling and muscle control in my hands. But I do what I can and have to be satisfied with what I am able to get done with each attempt. As the wise proverb says the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, it won't happen in one sitting.

Thought I would give an update on my current project. After a minor delay while reaquanting myself with the new features and offerings from Amazon for self publishing and doing some research on graphics artists and editors for the finish work to be done I am back on track, though a little behind on my schedule. I should be able to catch up or at least come in close to my desired completion date. However, as I am deciding to do the cover art and design myself including all the artwork, layout, etc. I could wind up further behind schedule depending on how difficult this becomes. Thus far, having finally found a good program for the digital artwork and illustrations, the illustrations and cover art seem to be coming along smoothly. As of today I am still projecting the release for late November or early December and bonus, the option to order a physical copy as well as a digital version if I can get the final designs finished for the physical copy cover.

11/05/2015

Well.. I am almost ready to publish Tinsel the Littlest Elf. It is Christmas story about the elf Tinsel Evergreen who, though only two and a half years old, helps Santa solve a problem that "has dogged him for years" and in doing so learns that everyone, no matter their age or size, has the ability to make a special impact for the better in the lives of those around them.

I wrote it for my wife and girls last year as a Christmas present. Now I am at the stage of final edits and finding a couple of proof readers/editors to catch any mistakes I may have missed in my own multiple reviews/editing/proofing. I expect have the cover art figured out by this weekend and then it is just a matter of completing the final edits and converting the entire book into digital formats for e-book publishing through Amazon and then maybe Barnes & Noble. Hoping to have it up and ready for purchase by the end of November in time to be enjoyed for Christmas. It makes a great bedtime story or after dinner read while everyone sits around the tree and enjoys family time.
