Cape Verde has delivered one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, earning a hard-fought draw against tournament favorite Spain in the nation’s first-ever World Cup match.

The African island nation entered the tournament as underdogs but showed remarkable discipline and resilience against a Spanish side expected to dominate. Time and again, Cape Verde’s defense stood firm as Spain pushed forward in search of a breakthrough.

Leading the charge was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose seven-save masterclass helped secure a historic result. At 40 years old, the captain produced one of the performances of the tournament, frustrating Spain’s attack and helping Cape Verde announce its arrival on football’s biggest stage. For a nation making its World Cup debut, the result feels less like a draw and more like a statement to the world.
