Quick and easy Holiday mental health hacks:
.

Phone Detox: Delete apps or turn off notifications; take "mini phone vacations".

Nature Nudge: Step outside for fresh air and daylight, even for 5 minutes.

Grounding Tasks: Interrupt anxiety by doing a simple, immediate task like making your bed or brushing your teeth.

Pet Power: Spend time petting an animal to boost mood.

Mindful Sip: Enjoy a warm drink outdoors in silence.

If you have a Combat Veteran in your family and you don’t like their moods and behavior around the holidays; please consider these six things:

1.) Your combat veteran has served in countries where people are blessed to receive a tattered pair of shoes or have clean water to drink; he/she no longer lives the “first world illusion” and no longer cares that if you buy one play station you can get a second one for fifty percent off. In fact, they find it hard to appreciate any of the gluttonous commercialism and overindulgence that permeates American holidays. Standing watch, boring as it was, had so much more purpose than going to the mall.

2.) Your Combat Veteran is thankful for the most basic things; not thankful for mega-sales and million dollar parades. They are thankful to be alive; thankful to have survived both the wars far away and the wars they struggle with inside.

3.) Your Combat Veteran is thankful that it wasn't them that got killed, but their celebrations are forever complicated by guilt and loss over those that were. Some of the most thankful times in their life were some of the scariest. Their feelings of thanks and celebration often conjure memories that are equally painful.

4.) Your Combat Veteran is not like you anymore. At some point, for some period of time, their entire life boiled down to just three simple things: when will I eat today, when will I sleep today, and who will I have to kill or will try to kill me today? They are not like you anymore. Be patient.

5.) Your Combat Veteran does not need a guilt-trip or a lecture; they already feel detached in their grief while others so easily embrace the joy of the season. They need understanding and space; empathy not sympathy. Be patient.

6.) Your Combat Veteran does love his/her family and is thankful for the many blessings in their life…and they are thankful for you. They also are thankful to those who didnt come home. Often, their minds gravitate towards those memories. Be patient.

To all my brothers and sisters of the uniform, know that we all struggle with one thing or another but as we go into this holiday season, reach out to those you love. You didn't fight alone on the battlefield and we don't have to fight alone at home.

Much love and peace this and every holiday season from this point on.

Happy Wednesday. The holiday season can bring about a nearly fourfold increase in stress levels. Especially with families, couples and children. As a small bonus wanted to share a love language test- this is also the time to reset your relationship if you wish.

The SHEEPDOG Program:Who We Are

The SHEEPDOG Program is a licensed and credentialed counseling program for both mental health and substance abuse. We offer a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Out Patient (IOP) Program created specifically for Veterans, Federal and State Law Enforcement Officers, and First Responders. This group is unique and only open those who meet these prerequisites or those who get special approval by the program director.

This program is designed to provide innovative treatment approaches utilizing a unique take on peer reviewed and empirically proven interventions. The treatment is provided by professionals who are committed to understanding the character, sacrifices, and motivation of our Veterans, Law Enforcement Officers, and First Responders.

Our treatment approach is led and adapted by our program director, who is a retired Force Reconnaissance Marine and Marine Raider from Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC).

The Sheepdog program provides a comprehensive, tailor made program customized for each individual based off their presenting issues. We believe that there is never a generic predetermined program that should be blanketed across every client. Every case is reviewed by the program director, medical director, and the FCC Chief of Clinical Operations to provide the most direct and efficient approach to addressing each clients concerns. The program is fully capable of addressing mental health, behavioral health, TBI, stress management, physical trauma, emotional trauma, and addiction issues.
