šŸ¦ Ice Cream Truck Complaints: Answered šŸ¦

As of recent, members of the Melvindale Police Department have observed several complaints online, or by citizens during the course of their patrol, regarding vehicles NOT stopping for the Ice Cream Truck’s stop sign (which is required by Michigan State Law) and speeding by the Ice Cream Truck, endangering lives of children in the community.

On April 29, 2025, at or around 7:15pm, a Melvindale Police Officer located an Ice Cream Truck, servicing the community of Melvindale.

The officer spoke with the driver and let them know they would follow them around the city and make sure children were able to safely get their ice cream on this rather warm day.

At or around 7:40pm, while the Ice Cream Truck
was stopped, making sales to a mass of children at a park in the City of Melvindale, the officer spotted a brown sedan that was approaching. With the Ice Cream Truck’s flashing lights and stop sign, the vehicle blew by, failing to stop for the stop sign, and did not even slow down.

The officer activated the emergency lights and sirens and made a stop of the vehicle, only to discover the driver, was an unlicensed juvenile, with an unlicensed parent in the rear of the vehicle. But it doesn’t end here, the officer observed TWO MORE juveniles in the vehicle, and nobody was wearing a seatbelt.

The parent was subsequently issued not one, but THREE violations. For allowing an unlicensed minor to drive, and child restraint violations for the juveniles without seatbelts.

Please slow down, and stop šŸ›‘ for Ice Cream Truck’s when their lights are flashing and the stop sign is displayed, it is STATE LAW.

ā€œHey, that’s that truckā€.

On April 18th, 2025, at 8:30pm… a busy, warm day in the City of Melvindale.

A rather new Melvindale Police Officer was in his patrol vehicle alongside his FTO (Field Training Officer) when the Officer spotted a truck parked at an open business.

Prior to this day, the officer observed the truck in a parking lot with nobody inside, and was able to find out through a search of the law enforcement database that the registered owner of the truck had a significant outstanding felony warrant.

The Officer and FTO positioned themselves nearby, notifying dispatch they would be conducting surveillance on this vehicle.

While conducting surveillance, the officer positively identified an individual inside the business as the registered owner of the truck, who was currently arrest-able anywhere in the State of Michigan for his outstanding warrant.

A few moments went by, until the individual got into the vehicle, and began to take off.

The Officer conducted a stop on the vehicle and was able to apprehend the individual, who was later turned over to the agency responsible for the warrant. It was also later discovered that the driver was operating with a suspended license (uh oh) and the vehicle was uninsured.

The individual was cited with two misdemeanor criminal traffic violations and will spend the weekend in jail before their long awaited court date.

A job well done.

CPL. SAID – EVER VIGILANT

Only a very small percentage—probably less than 1% -- of what the men and women of the Melvindale Police Department deal with on a daily basis makes the blotter. Unfortunately, our writers, especially of late, are just too busy to be able to post more stories.

Corporal Said was a hard-working guy. In his 14-months serving as one of Melvindale’s Finest, he wrote 1,580 tickets, impounded 139 cars, wrote 170 police reports, handled 13 traffic accidents, and arrested dozens of criminals, taking them off the streets and out of our neighborhoods. He experienced car chases, foot chases, fights, and being berated and assaulted for simply doing his job. Things no police officer is a stranger to.

Corporal Said was ever vigilant in his efforts to protect the community where he lived, worked, and spent nearly all of his time.

Here’s an example of Corporal Said’s proactive policing:

On July 20th around 6:30 AM (just one day before he was murdered), Corporal Said was on patrol, and spotted a man jaywalking across Dix Road at Oakwood. As Corporal Said approached the 32-year-old white male from Flat Rock, the man took off running, entering the gas station across the street. The man appeared to be trying to hide something on one of the store shelves.

Corporal Said detained the man and placed him in handcuffs. While patting the man down, Corporal Said found a glass crack pipe in his pocket. A records check showed the man to have a felony warrant for dangerous drugs out of Wayne County. These are the types of people who lurk at night, and who police officers across this great nation are always on the lookout for.

The man was issued tickets for jaywalking and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was then transported to Wayne County Jail and locked up.

THE 2%

During this extremely difficult time, the outpouring of support from the Melvindale community, other police agencies, and people across the country has been overwhelming. It has been a beautiful reminder for our disheartened officers, that 98% of people in this country support law enforcement and appreciate the sacrifices made by police officers.

It is for the 98% that we come to work. It is for the 98% that we work overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends. It is for the 98% that we go to work knowing we may lose our lives in the pursuit of law and order, justice, and protecting our community.

And then there are the 2%. Those who no matter what, attack law enforcement on every level. Who kick the police when they are down. Those who are so filled with hate, who are so vile, so despicable, they will stop at nothing to hurt us.

Take for example this 60-year-old white male from Detroit, who was spotted ripping down the blue ribbons that our loving residents have put up around town in a show of support for Corporal Said and the Melvindale Police Department. After phone calls from concerned residents, police quickly apprehended the man.

He admitted to ripping down the blue police ribbons. He was issued tickets for disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property. A records check showed an officer safety caution flag, and also showed the man to have a probation violation warrant out of Monroe. This member of the 2% was arrested and turned over to Monroe County.

To the 98% - thank you. We appreciate all you do for us.

A large amount of misinformation pertaining to the murder of Corporal Said is being posted online. Let's address several of these items.

First, it has been alleged that there was a 10-minute delay before backup was dispatched. This is 100% false. As soon as Cpl. Said radioed that he was going to make contact with two suspicious persons, and moments later that he had one running, two officers and a lieutenant immediately began driving to the location with police lights and sirens on. These officers arrived on scene within approximately 30-40 seconds of Corporal Said's radio transmission. When these officers discovered what happened, Dearborn Fire Department and every available unit from nearby cities was dispatched. Multiple agencies including Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Michigan State Police, Wayne County Sheriff, Lincoln Park, Allen Park, Southgate, Detroit, River Rouge, Ecorse, Riverview, Wyandotte, Inkster, Homeland Security, and the ATF, etc. rushed to scene to assist Melvindale.

Second, it has been alleged that nobody lowered the flag at Melvindale City Hall / Police Station to half-mast. This is false. When it was confirmed that Corporal Said had passed away, Lieutenant Furman and Corporal Winward lowered the flag to half-mast in honor of Corporal Said.

Third, there has been incorrect funeral and service information posted online. The Melvindale Police Department will post correct funeral details as soon as they are available.

Here at the Melvindale Police Department, our hearts are broken, and our department is shattered. We are dealing with every law enforcement agency's worst nightmare, and something we have all prayed would never happen. Please do not make things worse by posting false or unsubstantiated information.

MELVINDALE POLICE IN MOURNING

Today, one of Melvindale’s finest, 26-year-old Police Corporal Mohamed Said, was murdered in cold blood by 44-year-old Michael Lopez, who was released from prison less than 1 month ago by a broken justice system.

The entire Melvindale Police Department is in mourning. We have lost far more than a co-worker, and more than just a friend. We have lost a member of our family. Corporal Said was an amazing human being who wanted nothing more than to be a police officer and serve this community.

Please keep Corporal Said and his family, friends, loved ones, and fellow police officers in your prayers. We all need them.

Full details to come when it is appropriate.

AND NOW HE KNOWS

On July 18th around 7:40 PM, a Melvindale lieutenant watched as yet another vehicle drove past the road closed barricades on Greenfield at Allen, and into an active construction zone. Perhaps he didn’t notice the 2 large orange and white barricades, which had 2 large signs stating the road is closed to thru traffic.

The lieutenant got behind the vehicle and noticed a fishy looking paper license plate under a dark tinted license plate cover. The lights and sirens came on. After a conversation with the driver, a Hispanic male from Detroit, the lieutenant learned he had no license, no insurance, a fake paper license plate, and an unregistered vehicle. The driver had a vehicle title, but it was not completed at the time of sale as required by law.

The driver received tickets for driving around barricades, never acquiring a driver license, no insurance, improper license plate, and improper display of a license plate.

The vehicle was impounded.

If the driver was wondering how Melvindale's zero-tolerance policy works, now he knows.

MAN ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AFTER FOOT PURSUIT

On July 18th around 9PM, Melvindale officers were dispatched to the 17900 block of Reed Street for a domestic disturbance. The caller reported that the father of her children would not leave the location. When officers rolled up, they observed a 24-year-old black male standing next to a car in the driveway. Inside the car was a 22-year-old female, crying and bleeding from the mouth.

Upon seeing officers, the man took off running toward the back of the house. The man ran behind the garage and hopped the fence. Melvindale’s finest pursued the man, finally taking him into custody on the 3600 block of Carol Street.

The woman told officers that the man came to the house and was trying to take her car, so she took the license plate off the car. She stated the man has been violent and aggressive toward her in the past, so she grabbed a hammer for protection. The woman told officers that the man then did become violent, shoving her and taking the hammer from her. He then struck her in the back of the head with the hammer and punched her in the side of her face and in the mouth.

Officers photographed the woman’s injuries. She refused medical treatment and was given information on domestic violence resources.

Officers found the hammer in the driveway. The man denied pushing the woman or hitting her, but later stated that he did push her. Being lied to on a regular basis is a rather annoying part of police work. šŸ˜’

The man was arrested and taken to the Melvindale jail.

On July 18th around 8:00PM, a white female pumping gas at the Sunoco at Oakwood and Dix, was approached by a black male wearing a black hoodie and black scarf. The man grabbed the woman’s gold necklace, ripping it off her neck. He then grabbed her purse, yanking it off her shoulder, and ran away on foot toward the rear of the gas station.

Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
