As the anchor of the Hi Rhythm Section, his bass laid the groove behind the Memphis soul classics — from Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” to Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain.”

Beyond the Hi Records era, Leroy’s bass work drove Syl Johnson’s album Back in the Game (1994), recorded with the original Hi Rhythm band, and he brought his unmistakable-pocket groove to Melissa Etheridge’s MEmphis Rock and Soul (2016), recorded at Royal Studios.
