Mahalia Jackson, a prominent gospel singer and civil rights icon used her powerful voice and influence to support the African American freedom struggle, notably inspiring Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Beginning in the 1940s, she was one of the first singers to take gospel out of the church, drawing white audiences and selling millions of records. She inspired generations of singers, including Aretha Franklin, Della Reese, Albertina Walker and Mavis Staples of The Staples Singers.

In 1956, despite death threats, Mahalia went to Montgomery, Alabama for a concert to raise money for the movement. Jackson's music became synonymous with the movement, providing inspiration and solace to those fighting for equality.

Today we celebrate and recognize American writer, anthropologist, folklorist, and documentary filmmaker, Zora Neale Hurston. She portrayed racial struggles in the early-20th-century American South.

Hurston’s ethnographic research made her a pioneer writer of “folk fiction” about African Americans in the South. She was a prominent writer in the Harlem Renaissance. Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937, is her most celebrated novel.
