The Love Songs of W.E.B. Dubois by Honoree Fannone Jeffers

My favorite book of the year thus far! It is an epic, poetic, historical fiction novel. Every word is intentional.

I finished the book the same night I went to the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Awards. Clayborne Carson said to have a vision and an imagination to dream and do something better. Kerry Kennedy said to read deeply words that make us feel something and challenges how we think. And, Stacey Abrams said to not be afraid of our power.

Jeffers’ book was what I needed. It answered my question. “The question is the point. The question is my breath.”

It’s not cozy outside. But, inside? Yes! I am reading “The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Anne Barrows.

Books and reading bring people together and through difficult times. 💝

I read “The Other Black Girl” in 2021, I think, and I liked it. When I saw that it was adapted to a HULU series, I got excited. I always like reading a book before seeing the movie or tv show.

I highly recommend either reading or watching the show, or both.

Well, school is back in session and that means car reads are back too. I finished The Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson and it was a 5⭐️ read! I’ll post more after I read The House of Eve.

This week I am reading The Push by Ashley Audrain, and it is not disappointing. Motherhood is hard y’all and kids should not have to endure childhood. My feelings and thoughts are at odds, and the author is doing her job of creating that tension for me as a reader. I am halfway through but ooowee👀.

It’s a family reunion, but not in Memphis. I sat in the countryside of Monticello, Florida listening to the kids play outside. It was refreshing when the rain came through, but we didn’t care. It smelled good outside.

I flipped a page or two of Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. Being from Memphis, I immediately got the book upon release;however, I could not get pass the first chapter. I put it aside for another time. I heard mixed reviews, but I wanted to read for myself and brought Memphis along with me down to Florida. I am midway through. Although I clearly see the critique others have, I think there is beauty in writing and I am enjoying Memphis so far.

The Cloisters book is for someone, but not me. Do not get me wrong. If you are into tarot cards and want a quick read, this is the book for you. I think this was one of my fastest reads this year. For me, it felt like the cards were meant to hold a bigger role on this stage almost at par with The Cloisters Museum itself, but it didn’t. 👀

Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion & %Arabica Coffee in Abu Dhabi.

I’ve had this book for a while, before Didion’s passing. I do not know why I chose to take this book on my trip. My choice was good.

Maria has acted in two films. You tolerate Maria. You feel sorry for Maria. You scream “snap out of it,Maria!” But, you know she won’t. Her loss is your loss. Nothing matters. You carry a sadness with you. Didion’s writing lays it out to the very end.

A cup of coffee helps.

This is a read for one sitting, but my life rarely shapes that way. It took me longer than norm to finish. Hemingway-esque and I like it. I picked up Slouching Toward Bethlehem for a later this year read.

How are smelling today? Yes smelling.
Are you smelling sweet and flirty? Or, deep and seductive?

I recommend The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro for anyone who loves fragrances.

This book gives me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo vibes. I am only about half way through, and every page is a pleasure.

It is about Grace Monroe, a wife, who feels she is an “odd duck” in London high society. She becomes the sole heir to Eva d’Orsey’s fortune. But wait? Grace has no clue who this woman is; then, travels to Paris, France to find what links her to Eva. The setting flips between London, Paris, and New York, winding through the 1920s and 1955.

I have the hardback from the local library, but the audio version is good too!
