Jakayla Ashanti Williams was 18 years old when she gave birth to a baby boy at her Dothan Alabama home in August 2023 and threw him in a dumpster equipped with a trash compactor near her apartment complex. When questioned she told investigators she did not want to be a mother and that having a baby cost too much money.

Williams initially told family she had handed the baby to a hospital worker. Surveillance footage disproved her account and she eventually confessed to abandoning the newborn wrapped in a mattress protector inside a zipped duffel bag. The contents had already been transported to a landfill where investigators found the baby's remains.

Williams faced capital murder charges and prosecutors initially sought the death penalty. Just minutes before jury selection she accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to one count of capital murder.

On Monday she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She is now 21 years old.

Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is facing significant backlash after appearing on stage at a Chris Brown concert in Arlington alongside state Rep. Venton Jones to announce that Brown and Usher would both have their names entered into the Congressional Record.

People immediately questioned why a sitting congresswoman would honor someone with Brown's history. Many pointed out his 2009 guilty plea for assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna and a pattern of violence against women.

Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross called it ridiculous and tone deaf. "Chris Brown has a problem and several folks beyond Rihanna have met his violent rage," she wrote. "When Black women suffer domestic violence at the highest rates and often fatally this was tone deaf as hell." Author Roxane Gay called it a bizarre and unacceptable misstep. Jones apologized Tuesday. Cropkett has not publicly commented.

Jones apologized Tuesday saying he wanted to acknowledge the women his actions hurt. Crockett has not publicly commented on the presentation.

Brown fired back on Instagram. "Funny thing is ya'll came to me with this. Not the other way around. I ain't asked to be honored because I knew some s--- like this would happen."

Dennikia Rachelle Boyce, 37, was arrested Thursday morning in Scotland Neck North Carolina by the U.S. Marshals Service after spending weeks on the run following the July 24 shooting deaths of two Virginia Department of Transportation contractors. Boyce is wanted in Virginia on two counts of second degree murder.

Rai'Shon Eugene Delarge, 30, and Philip Avery Wilson, 34, were shot at a VDOT equipment yard in Chesterfield County Virginia. Delarge was pronounced dead at the scene and Wilson died later at a hospital. Virginia State Police described the shooting as domestic in nature.

Surveillance cameras captured Boyce in North Carolina hours after the shooting. She was spotted at a Walmart on July 24 and a Sunoco on July 26 before a vehicle registered to her was found behind a church on July 28.

Boyce faces two counts of second degree murder in Virginia and a federal charge of flight to avoid prosecution. Virginia State Police are working to extradite her.

Twenty-two Democratic-led states, including California, New York, Washington D.C., and Illinois, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, have filed a lawsuit to block a new Trump administration rule that would require immigrants seeking green cards to be financially self-sufficient, rather than relying on taxpayer-funded benefits like food stamps, Medicaid, or housing vouchers. The rule is set to take effect Friday.

The administration argues the change protects American taxpayers and ensures immigrants can support themselves without government assistance. Democrats say the rule forces immigrant families to give up benefits they are legally entitled to out of fear.

The rule revives a policy from Trump's first term that was reversed by the Biden administration. It has been part of federal immigration policy for more than 140 years but previously focused only on cash benefit programs.

The Trump administration says the broader rule gives officers the flexibility needed to make accurate determinations about whether an immigrant is likely to become dependent on government support.

Iyanna Yaya Mayweather daughter of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has been ordered to pay $50 million to the woman she stabbed at NBA YoungBoy's home in 2020.

The incident occurred on April 3 2020 when Mayweather arrived at YoungBoy's Louisiana home and found LaPattra Lashai Jacobs there. The two argued before Mayweather allegedly retrieved two knives from the kitchen and stabbed Jacobs in the arm and bicep. Jacobs required surgery.

In 2022 Mayweather pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A Harris County Texas judge has now awarded Jacobs $40.1 million in compensatory damages covering physical pain mental anguish loss of earnings and disfigurement. An additional $10 million in exemplary damages was added because Mayweather knowingly used a deadly weapon.

The judge also ordered Mayweather to submit documentation of all bank accounts revenue streams and contractual obligations to fulfill the judgment.

Shada Canzater, 35, a sergeant with the Hapeville Police Department in Georgia, was arrested on August 31 on charges of first degree cruelty to children aggravated assault and simple assault for family violence. Officials have not shared details about what led to the arrest.

The timing could not be more striking. Just one month earlier on August 5 the department celebrated her promotion to sergeant on Facebook. "Leadership is more than a title it is a commitment to serve mentor and set the example for others," the chief said of her at the time.

Hapeville Police Chief Bruce Hedley announced Canzater has since resigned from her position. Her bond was set at $5,000. She had been with the department since 2019 and had been promoted twice during that time.

This is not her first legal trouble. In July 2024 Canzater was arrested after hitting and killing 63-year-old attorney and Air Force veteran Donell Holiday with her patrol vehicle while on duty in 2023. Holiday died on March 8 2024 after brain surgery. A final plea hearing for that case is scheduled for the end of this month.

Kyle Bickham, 29, was heading home from an overnight shift at an Amazon warehouse when police say three people pushed him off a moving CTA Red Line train near the 69th Street station in Chicago. He landed on the third rail and was struck by another train.

Police initially reported that Bickham had jumped before surveillance video and witness accounts revealed he was pushed during an altercation. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide from multiple injuries.

A 15-year-old girl was arrested and charged with first degree murder, mob action, murder during the commission of a forcible felony and aggravated battery of a transit passenger. She was ordered detained at her Saturday court appearance. Two other suspects remain at large.

Bickham's family described him as a hardworking devoted man who had recently secured a new apartment closer to work. They are calling for stronger CTA security and urging anyone with information about the two remaining suspects to contact investigators immediately.

The only juror who voted to convict Lindsay Clancy of murdering her three children was a Black man in his 30s and the only person of color on the panel. The other 11 jurors all white voted to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. He stood alone and now the media is coming for him.

After fellow jurors revealed his race and age on national television outlets including MSN and NBC began digging into his background. Within hours his name photos family details and a dismissed 2021 domestic assault case were circulating across social media. Critics are calling it deliberate character assassination designed to punish him for being the only one who voted to hold Clancy accountable for the deaths of Cora 5 Dawson 3 and 8-month-old Callan.

Conservatives are fighting back. A crowdfunding campaign on GiveSendGo called Stand With the Juror has already raised $187,000 toward a $250,000 goal to cover his personal protection lost wages and potential legal action against the media outlets responsible.

Supporters say he showed moral courage by standing firm for three children who were killed. The media exposed him for voting his conscience. Now people are writing checks.

Winter Jones was a 6-year-old non-verbal autistic girl who was supposed to be taken to school on August 13 2026. Instead she was left inside a Kid University daycare van in Cordova Tennessee for hours while temperatures outside reached the mid to high 90s with a heat index around 103 degrees.

She was found unresponsive around 3:23 p.m. and rushed to a hospital in critical condition. She did not make it.

Three employees have been indicted. Van driver Tametria Norry assistant director Sabrina Powe and daycare assistant Amilya Hardin each face charges of aggravated child neglect criminally negligent homicide and tampering with governmental records.

Investigators found the daycare skipped required vehicle inspections after unloading children never completed accurate transportation logs and failed to do walk-throughs to confirm all children were off the vehicle. Fort Worth ISD is offering teachers starting salaries of $100,000 at several of its lowest performing campuses through a program called Accelerated Campus Excellence. Elementary principals will earn $130,000 and middle school principals will earn $145,000. The starting teacher salary exceeds the median household income in Fort Worth which was $82,503 in 2024.

Despite the pay increases the district is facing a state takeover. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath announced the state would assume control of Fort Worth ISD following years of academic underperformance. Only 41 percent of third and fourth grade students met grade level standards last year up from 33 percent in 2024.

Enrollment has also been in freefall. The district peaked at 87,432 students in 2016 and now sits at 67,641. Enrollment is projected to drop further to 60,155 by 2031.

The state says the district needs specialized leadership with a proven record of turning around large urban school districts.
