Experience one of the most powerful works in classical music when the Memphis Symphony Orchestra performs Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, a sweeping and deeply emotional masterpiece led by Music Director Robert Moody.

The program also features Alexander Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto, brought to life by acclaimed trumpet soloist Will Leathers. From bold, fanfare-like moments to an exhilarating finale, this virtuosic performance is filled with color, energy, and dazzling technical skill.

Now, you probably think this Italian restaurant was named after the famous bridge in, well, Brooklyn. And you would be wrong. Why don’t you pay a visit to the establishment featured in this month’s “Classic Dining” column, to enjoy a good meal AND learn the origin of the name? But before you do that, you should read the column, by the one-and-only Michael Donahue.

Diners can enjoy an authentic Italian dining experience in the heart of East Memphis.

For this month’s “Sips” column, Bruce VanWyngarden dropped by Tonica, where bartender Lisa Gradinger served him a cocktail she called “The Vieux Carre.” Whether or not you’ve ever been to the French Quarter in New Orleans, we suggest you try one, too.

Tonica’s Lisa Gradinger recreates a New Orleans classic.

Tony Thomas is indeed a Local Treasure. Not only has he formed two popular groups — the Tony Thomas Trio and the Tony Thomas Three — but he's also known as the maestro of the Mighty Wurlitzer at The Orpheum Theatre-Memphis. Alex Greene tells his story in our January issue.

The keyboard virtuoso has played a pivotal part in local music.

What better way to celebrate the New Year than new beginnings? So we've compiled an album of weddings from 2025, along with a handy list of venues for the wedding, rehearsal dinner, reception, and any other special event you'll enjoy throughout the new year.

A 2025 album of Memphis weddings. Plus, a list of wedding venues.

It’s the new year, if you haven’t been paying attention, and Frank Murtaugh offers some good advice for making the best of the next 12 months. What are his qualifications for doing so? “You might consider it part of a managing editor’s circulatory system,” he writes. “We exist to see a project finished — and another begun — smoothly. How can the next year be navigated smoothly? How will the next 12 months impact my health, and vice versa?” Read the story, and follow his advice, in six easy steps.

Make 2026 a year you look back on with a healthy smile.

Back in 1982, we interviewed immigrant families who had come to Memphis from Laos, the Netherlands, India, and the Soviet Union, asking them about their experiences since they had moved to America. For our January issue, Chris McCoy tracked down one of these families, and interviewed several others who had come her more recently, asking each of them the all-important question: Is America still the land of opportunity? Their answers may surprise you.

It's entirely possible that you had friends or family in town over the holidays, and you spent every night and day keeping them entertained. But for the rest of you who still have energy to spare, 2026 offers a nice slate of events happening around town in January (like the Orpheum’s production of “The Outsiders,” shown here). We’ve compiled a handy list of some of our favorites.

A calendar of events to kick off the New Year.

That's Dulce Maria Solcedo — born in Mexico City and now living in Memphis — on the cover of our January issue. We kick off our anniversary year with a cover story by Chris McCoy on "The Immigrants" — comparing their hopes and dreams of today with those of families we interviewed for a similar cover story in 1982. In this issue, we also introduce you to Local Treasure Tony Thomas (the maestro of the Orpheum’s Mighty Wurlitzer), showcase the art of Veda Reed, and look back at the amazing but all-too-short life of opera star Ruth Welting. There’s plenty more — Michael Donahue enjoys “Classic Dining” at Brooklyn Bridge, Bruce VanWyngarden takes a few sips at Tonica, and we even include a photo album of notable weddings from 2025, so pick up a copy today, or better yet, subscribe: memphismagazine.com/subscriptions.

Happy New Year — and happy anniversary to us! 2026 marks quite a milestone in the history of Memphis Magazine, since it's been 50 years since we first started putting ink in paper. We've celebrated many milestones since 1976 (though, inexplicably, making no mention of our 10th year). In her January “Letter from the Editor,” Anna Traverse writes that during the past half-century, “A central goal of this magazine is to reflect Memphis’ culture — often in celebration, often in bafflement, and always with authenticity." Throughout 2026 we will be looking back on our past, and our city’s. "Thank you for sharing our fascination,” she says, ”with the place we have always called home.”

As we approach our 50th anniversary, we have been leafing through our voluminous archives like they’re family photo albums, finding glorious (and awkward) memories along the way.
