Oh sure, we get it — over the holidays it's fun to tear open presents and see what you’ve received from family and friends (unless it’s another pair of plain white socks from Aunt Gertrude). But this year, we offer another suggestion that’s literally “outside the box.” With the help of Santa Sparks (pictured below, if you haven’t met him before) we have compiled a “Generosity Guide” of local nonprofits that could really benefit from your assistance this year. And we’ve even presented them in various categories, to help you decide: music, literacy, livability, nature, and more. Please consider “the gift that keeps on giving.”

In 2017, when he was 82, Bartlett resident Dale Sanders set a Guinness World Record — the oldest person to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail, a journey of 2,199 miles from Mt. Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia. That record was soon broken by an older fellow hiker, so this year, he decided to do it again — at age 90. Last month, Greybeard (his AT trail name) set out on his remarkable adventure, and as you read this, he has traveled some 600 miles. Editor-in-chief Anna Traverse tells the story of a true “Local Treasure,” and readers can visit Dale’s Facebook and Instagram pages to track his progress. “God willing and the creeks don’t rise again,” as he is fond of saying, he will retake the world record for being the oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail within a year.

At 90, Dale Sanders is on the path to a record-breaking hike — all 2,199 miles of the Appalachian Trail.

Anna Traverse has the mountains and, more specifically, the Appalachian Trail on her mind in this month’s “Letter from the Editor.” That’s partly, but not entirely, because her cover story features a Bartlett resident, Dale Sanders, who is hiking the AT at age 90. That story goes live on our website (www.memphismagazine.com) tomorrow, but you could be reading it now if you subscribe (hint, hint). In the meantime, we should follow our editor’s advice: “I’d like to remember Dale’s attitude as my own days slip past: Stay in the moment, but don’t stay in one place.”

Could you, in a pinch, land a commercial aircraft? What about hiking the entire Appalachian Trail?

Our November cover shows a striking image of a man atop a mountain. But this isn’t just any man, and it’s certainly not just any mountain. The cover story by editor-in-chief Anna Traverse features Bartlett resident Dale Sanders, who — at age 90! — is planning to set a Guinness World Record by being the oldest person to hike all 2,199 miles of the Appalachian Trail, stretching from Maine to Georgia. If you’re reading this today, “Greybeard” (his AT trail name) has already hiked 600 miles along his journey.

There’s lots more, of course. This issue includes our new “Generosity Guide,” with our very own Santa Sparks suggesting nonprofits who would deeply appreciate donations — the “gift that keeps on giving.” Our annual Homegrown Holiday Gift Guide showcases handcrafted items from local artists and retailers. We also present the history of the Jewish Foundation, Vance Lauderdale recalls the burger chain Sandy’s, Michael Donahue enjoys Classic Dining at A-Tan, Bruce VanWyngarden has Sips at Cocozza East, and lots more. These days, most college football teams try to win as many games as possible — and then fire their coaches if they don’t (See: LSU, Penn State, Florida, etc.). But in the late 1930s, a little college in Arkansas made national headlines by losing every single game — on purpose. Read the remarkable story of the Arkansas A&M Boll Weevils here.
