September is Su***de Prevention Month, and this month’s Focus feature asks an important question: What does it really mean to prevent su***de? 💜🩵

For LGBTQ+ people, prevention is about more than crisis response. It is about belonging, affirming care, supportive families, safe schools, community connection and making sure help is available when someone needs it.

Our latest feature looks at the realities facing LGBTQ+ people, the warning signs we should take seriously, the importance of addressing self-harm and the Memphis, Tennessee and national resources available when someone needs support.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988. You do not have to wait for a crisis to ask for help.

🌟 A different kind of headline from Tennessee. 🌟

On September 1, Nashville Metro Council elected Olivia Hill president pro tempore, making her the first transgender person to hold the leadership position.

But this story is about more than a historic first. It is about what happens when a transgender Tennessean is known for her work, her relationships and the trust she earns.

Hill’s message to transgender people across the South who may be wondering whether acceptance, opportunity and progress are still possible is simple:

“They are.”

For Focus, that is a story worth telling.
