🎓 College students urged to guard against scams and identity theft

As students head back to campus, BBB is reminding families to talk about protecting money and personal information.

College students may be handling loans, scholarships, budgeting, online shopping and job searches on their own for the first time — making them potential targets for scammers and identity thieves.

BBB recommends keeping sensitive documents secure, watching bank and credit accounts, protecting devices, being cautious with social media ads and researching companies before shopping online or accepting job offers.

🚒 Fire boundary dispute escalates in Scotland County

An ongoing effort to establish fire protection boundaries in Scotland County has escalated after an attorney for Scotland County Fire Corporation sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Gorin District Volunteer Fire Department.

The dispute involves areas both departments have historically covered, along with questions about memberships, response areas and community ties that developed over decades without formal boundary lines.

The letter is not a court order, and no court has ruled on the dispute. Gorin is seeking legal advice, and the boundary issue remains unresolved.

💰 Missouri businesses may round cash totals starting Aug. 28

Missouri retailers will be allowed to round cash purchase totals to the nearest nickel under a new state law taking effect Aug. 28.

The optional change applies only to cash transactions and only to the final total after merchandise, discounts and sales taxes have been calculated. Noncash payments, including credit cards, debit cards, checks and mobile payments, must still reflect the exact amount.

The Missouri Department of Revenue says rounding will not change businesses’ sales tax obligations.

Northeast Missouri Beekeepers will host a free field day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Lewis County Airport, about 2 miles east of Monticello on Missouri Highway 16.

The hands-on event is open to anyone interested in bees or considering becoming a beekeeper. Participants will learn how hive inspections are conducted, suit up with experienced club members and visit hives at the airport.

Activities may include checking frames for eggs, larvae, capped brood, pollen, honey stores and pests — and maybe even harvesting honey if the hives have enough stored.

🚨 Scam alert: Free gas and grocery voucher postcards may not be what they seem

BBB is warning consumers about postcards claiming they qualify for hundreds of dollars in free gas or grocery vouchers.

According to BBB Scam Tracker reports, recipients are often told to call or visit a website and pay a processing fee to claim the reward. Some consumers then reported unauthorized charges, unwanted subscriptions or never receiving the promised gift cards.

BBB reminds consumers that legitimate prizes do not require upfront payment. Be cautious with payment information, watch for pressure tactics and report suspicious offers.
