I got to meet Microsoft 's President Brad Smith, and a few things stood out:

→ Microsoft's 2019 bet on OpenAI came from a simple idea: language is the "software" for the human brain. Replicate it, and you unlock AI's potential. Six years later, that intuition looks prescient.

→ On the 15,000 layoffs this year, his framing wasn't denial, it was reallocation. Jobs left one part of the company and opened in others. The harder problem, he says, is helping people make that transition.

→ His advice for an 18-year-old today isn't "learn to code." It's computer science AND liberal arts. His reasoning: AI raises questions about ethics and society that engineering alone can't answer.

→ He's skeptical of universal basic income. He'd rather bet on market-driven prosperity, backed by targeted public-private partnerships.

→ What keeps him up at night isn't AI itself. It's the widening gap, global north vs south, urban vs rural, and the risk that AI accelerates inequality instead of closing it.
