Hey, look at me. I’m the unofficial CFO of in Abingdon, Virginia. The Art Studio and Gallery is the creation of my daughter To my mind, the title stands for Chief Food Officer—I bring the Food, Beverage, and Fun anytime required! But, seriously, I’ve also had a crash course in all things Art, in every sense of the word—yes, about literal artists but also, the hanging, wrapping, organizing, marketing, and selling. I’ve also learned a bit of what it takes to own a Studio and Gallery. Bravo to She is a super talented and studied artist herself, but she is also smart, steadfast, laser focused, resourceful, tenacious, and diligent—she has worked her painting fingers to the bone to bring something different to this region and to the Town of Abingdon! She is a community builder and she is beyond committed. Drop on by and meet her!

What a week! I’m enjoying my favorite cocktail to be found in my hometown of Bristol, VA/TN
The drink is appropriately named “June Carter.” (Friends who don’t know, Bristol is the Birthplace of Country Music.)
Anyway! This cocktail is an easy-to-sip combo of good Bourbon, peach purée, orange bitters, a whisper of peach schnapps, and an ample Champagne floater! I do adore the original June Carter as well as her namesake cocktail. Happy Friday friends!

Grab the bubbly! I completed my third kitchen This one had all the same bells and whistles but was a whole lot less expensive and took a lot less time, and was a LOT more fun, especially during a long snowy weekend! Before the week gets all crazy, can we just shine a spotlight on this incredible meal Take a swipe! The Indian Spiced Fried Chicken was brilliant—I’m still swooning! Literally—they slater a halved and deboned chicken in an uber aromatic (cumin, coriander, little heat), then fry in the hot oil. The chicken is served topped with a big fresh tumble of curly carrots, pickled apricots, lemon, and parsley and an amazing juice for dunking.
BTW, I also adored the “Sunchokes” Small Plate! The Trout Spread with Fried Saltines was flawless—as was the Smoked Vanilla Ice Cream. Trust me, this was a “Nancy Happy Meal.” To start, especially, in these confused times—who doesn’t love a Mezcal Black Negroni!? My point—get out people. Try the spots; support the spots right in your own backyard! Thanks You have new fans!

This is the New Year’s Meal I’ve prepared for most of my adult life. I change up my methods and recipes every single year, but you can always count on a menu based on Black-Eyed Peas for Good Luck, Sautéed Greens (mostly Collards and Turnip Greens) for Wealth, and Cabbage for Good Health. I always serve long-grain rice to soak things up and a well made biscuit alongside these mainstays. This year, with so much going on in the world,
I skipped preparing my treasured meal and decided that a get-away was a better way to celebrate New Year’s Day! Instead, we enjoyed this favorite meal as my first Sunday Supper of the year.
My point is—silly as it sounds, the move felt powerful. I mean, who says you can only eat this food on New Year’s Day? Don’t we all agree that we can all use a little more Luck, Wealth, and Good Health any day; of any year, especially this year?! Either way, as I always say, this 2026 version was the “Best Ever.” Happy New Year friends! May all your cooking be intentional and delicious!
