This week in Merced: from a superintendent race under scrutiny, to key High Speed Rail decisions impacting the future Merced station, to a sentencing in a 2023 killing. Plus a look back at Merced AF, about two weeks after the festival lit up downtown.

The Merced FOCUS attended today’s meeting for the California High Speed Rail Authority’s board, who just voted unanimously on the project’s revised draft business plan.

Despite longstanding plans to build the Merced station in downtown, the revised draft plan proposes putting the station roughly four miles away from the urban core, on a rural swath of land near East Mission Avenue and Highway 99.

California state law, under Senate Bill 198, mandates that the first 171-mile operating segment of the train be built from Bakersfield to downtown Merced specifically.

Even though the draft plan was approved, any changes to Senate Bill 198 would require legislative approval. In other words, moving the proposed station outside downtown Merced cannot happen unless SB 198 is ammended by state lawmakers.

The Merced FOCUS caught up with Senator Anna Caballero, who sits on the authority board, after the meeting. Caballero’s district includes Merced.

The senator only had a few minutes to talk, but she gave her perspective on whether the proposed station should be built miles away from Merced’s downtown core.

A school district managed by a candidate running to be Merced County’s top education chief is coming under scrutiny after a recent audit raised questions.

Richard Lopez is the longtime superintendent of Merced River School District, a small district with roughly 300 students located in the unincorporated community of Winton.

Lopez is one of four candidates on the June 2 primary ballot for Merced County Superintendent of Schools, in a race to take the leadership reins from Steve Tietjen, who is retiring. Read the full story via link in the comments. 🔗

Downtown Merced received a colorful makeover recently.

Live painting of the murals was one activity for Merced residents to sit in on during a celebration last week called Merced Arts Festival, or “Merced AF.” The event brought dozens of businesses and people together to celebrate and teach many forms of art.

The event also comes just off the heels of downtown Merced’s designation as a cultural district by The California Arts Council in December. It is one of only two neighborhoods in the region to receive the designations. The other is the Dos Rios Arts and Culture District, Modesto. Read more via link in bio the comments🔗

Garcia has spent decades using a variety of mediums to bring his inspirations to life. His canvases range from skin, scrap wood and old furniture, to discarded metal, and even cardboard robots from when he was a kid.

A downtown Merced wall now holds a story of connection, womanhood and memory.

At the first ever Merced Art Festival, muralists Patty Pratt, Mikayla Gutiérrez and Misty Sanchez brought this piece to life — inspired by how something as simple as braiding hair can connect generations.
