On Octoer 8, 1908, Isadore Moritz published the first issue of the Mercedes Enterprise. He continued the operation until 1914; that same year Ben E. Hoyt began the Mercedes Tribune. Another paper, the News-Item, started in 1922 and merged with the Tribune seven years later to form the News-Tribune. Paul Netz bought the franchise in 1941 and restored the original name. STAFF:

The Mercedes Fire Department is proud to announce that we have been awarded two grants to enhance our emergency response capabilities and firefighter safety within our community.

🔥 $300,000 from the Texas Forest Service for the purchase of a new tanker (Tender-1). This project was made possible through a historic investment in the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program. The 89th Texas Legislature, with approval from the Governor of Texas, appropriated $192 million in one-time funding to fulfill previously unfunded grant requests submitted on or before November 7, 2024.

🔥 $223,500 from the Office of the Governor – FY2026 Border Zone Fire Department Program to acquire a pick up truck, trailer, track loader and fire box. This will support grass fires and when heavy equipment is needed during operations.

These valuable grants strengthen our ability to serve the community and ensure our firefighters remain ready and safe during emergency operations. We are grateful for the continued support and commitment to public safety.
