A story was posted on our website that included numerous inaccuracies. As soon as we were notified, we removed the story from our website. The story never appeared in our print edition. We are incredibly disappointed that someone we hired to cover an event did not provide an accurate account of what happened. We apologize sincerely to all involved.

During the last several months, research has been done by a town/school committee regarding Alton history in an effort to present new mascot names for Alton Central School. The committee has rested on three possibilities and would like input from the town. The choices are: The Baysiders – the history is the original SS Mount Washington, the “Old Mount,” was built and launched by B & M Railroad in Alton Bay in 1872; Alton Bay is a hub of transportation, community activity, and family recreation. The Engineers – the history is there was a railroad in Alton from 1850-1935; the Alton Bay Railroad Station was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 22, 1983. The Mountaineers – the history is Alton has many mountains that are used for recreation by Altonians and tourists such as Mt. Major, Straightback, Alton, and Prospect to name a few; In 1896, a monument was erected to the men of the 12th Regiment, “who bravely gave their lives that the nation might live.” There is also a monument at Gettysburg to the 12th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry Regiment erected by the State of NH on Sept. 28, 1888 with the inscription “The New Hampshire Mountaineers. . .” You can vote for your choice – either “The Baysiders,” “The Engineers” or “The Mountaineers” at the survey located at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACSMascot. Some of the big news reported from town/school elections: SB2 failed in Barnstead by a 325-319 vote, Sean Dunne and Ed Tasker won the Barnstead BOS seats and Diane Beijer and Eunice Landry won Barnstead SB seats. In New Durham, all warrant articles passed except Article 14 ($100,000 to Meetinghouse Capital Reserve Fund) and Mark Sullivan and Joan Swenson won budget committee seats. Paul LaRochelle and Richard MacDonald won BOS seats, the town operating budget failed by a 419-276 vote, petitioned article to add $950,000 to highway construction capital reserve fund (article 33) fell by a 547-169 vote. Two planning board amendments (articles 2 and 6) also failed. All other articles passed.

This came in too late for this week's edition but we wanted to share: On July 25, the town of Alton became aware of telephone spoofing or phishing happening in the local area. The perpetrators are using area code 603 and the Alton prefix of 875 on their caller ID when calling. Some of the calls are pre-recorded automation seeking money by claiming to sell fake products or services. They are using fake caller ID numbers of various 875 numbers including those of the Alton town government. Please be aware this is not the town of Alton government calling you. If you receive a call from an 875 number, we encourage you not to give out any information. The town of Alton has filed a formal complaint with the FCC and we are keeping track of who receives a call and which 875 number is being used. News from New Hampshire Fish and Game arrived too late for this week's edition: The Downing's Landing public boat access facility in Alton will be closed on Monday, May 21, and Tuesday, May 22, to allow for the installation of a temporary floating dock to replace the degraded courtesy docks at the boat ramp. The closure will begin on Sunday evening, May 20. Please check NH Fish and Game Department's Statewide Public Boat Access Program’s web page at www.fishnh.com/access/index.php for any last-minute schedule updates.
During the installation, the entire facility will be closed to the public to ensure a safe and effective work site. The ramp will be closed and there will be no opportunity to launch or retrieve motorized boats, sail boats, canoes, kayaks, or other self- propelled watercraft during this time period. The parking area for the ramp will also be closed to the public and there will be no fishing from the shore.

Alton School District results: Kristi Hikel (330) defeated Ruth Arsenault (199) for a one-year seat on the school board in the only contested race. All school district warrant articles passed.

Barnstead election results: For selectman, Lori Mahar won with 152 votes, for planning board, Nancy Carr (255) and Sharen Hodgdon (246) won seats, for budget committee, William Haynes (252) and Bruce Grey (261) both won seats, for school board (two years), Lyla Adkins won with 228 votes and for school board (three years), Eliza Drolet won with 317 votes.

Election results in Alton: For selectman, Phil Wittmann won another term with 233 votes, Robin Lane-Douglas won term as moderator with 423 votes, water commission seat went to Patrick O'Brien with 244 votes, budget committee seats went to Elizabeth Varney (295) and Patrick O'Brien (264), planning board (two years) went to Andrew Levasseur with 274 votes and zoning board member went to Andrew Levasseur with 391 votes. All articles passed except 23 (new aerial fire truck), 31 (parks and Rec vehicle CRF) and 59 (LRPC dues).
