Farmer Veteran Coalition Partners with Native American Agriculture Fund to Gather Critical Input from Native Veterans Working in Agriculture
Survey Seeking Native Veteran Feedback Closes March 7, Impacts Planning for Native, Rural Communities

WOODLAND, Calif. (AgPR) – Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) and the Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF) formally announced today a partnership aimed at gathering critical input from Native American U.S. military veterans working in the agricultural industry. The goal of the partnership is to generate responses to NAAF’s veteran survey and the feedback will be incorporated into their long-term vision for providing an infrastructure framework to harness Indian Country’s economic and nutritional potential to recover from COVID-19, which is outlined in their white paper, ‘Reimagining Native Food Economies.’

The survey is open for responses through March 7 and can be completed at nativeamericanagriculturefund.org/veterans-survey.

“Native Americans serve in the U.S. Armed Forces at one of the highest rates compared to other ethnicities and often the obligation to serve is steeped in ones’ traditional connections to our land,” said Toni Stanger-McLaughlin, J.D., (Colville), CEO of the NAAF. “When our Native veterans return, we want them to find healing and opportunity in the land. That is why the Native American Agriculture Fund is committed to assisting Native American veterans and our first step in assistance is this survey.”

The questionnaire aims to understand how Native veterans are involved in food production and agriculture; the financial, business, and technical needs of Native veterans and Native food entrepreneurs; and how to connect Native veteran farmers, ranchers, fishers, and growers more seamlessly with NAAF grantees to realize the vision and mission of NAAF.

“The Native American Agriculture Fund’s plan to develop 10 regional food hubs throughout the country will provide Native farmers and ranchers with the necessary infrastructure to create thriving and self-sustaining food systems for both Native and rural communities,” said FVC Executive Director Jeanette Lombardo. “As the nation’s largest nonprofit assisting military veterans embark on careers in agriculture, Farmer Veteran Coalition is the perfect fit to partner with the NAAF on this important project.”

American Indian or Alaska Natives who are veterans or currently serving members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to complete the survey. The first 200 Native farmer veterans to complete the survey will receive a limited edition co-branded FVC/NAAF challenge coin.

To learn more about the Native American Agriculture Fund and to read their whitepaper, visit nativeamericanagriculturefund.org. To learn more about Farmer Veteran Coalition, visit farmvetco.org.

The Native American Agriculture Fund plans to begin grantmaking in 2019. Your feedback is critical to informing the future direction and priorities of the Native American Agriculture Fund. Please complete this survey to provide your input.

New, Patent-pending EXCAVATOR™ Formula
Chalking Up Major-league Nutrient Release Numbers
“...significant residue reduction and up to 100 pounds more NPK...”

Columbus, Ohio (AgPR) Feb. 17, 2022 – As fertilizer prices hit record highs, one company is helping farmers claw back nutrients they already bought with a new patent-pending, fast-acting biological to break down residue and release more nutrients for next season’s crop.

“Results show significant residue reduction inside two weeks, and up to 100 pounds more NPK and micronutrients for the next crop,” said Mitch Eviston, Meristem Founder, and CEO, in announcing the new formulation of EXCAVATOR™ today. He added that EXCAVATOR and Meristem’s other new biologicals are part of the antidote for high fertilizer prices and can help farmers boost yields and beat inflation.

“You’ve never backed away from a fight, so don’t start now,” he smiled. “Don’t send as much money to big fertilizer companies concerned more with Wall Street than your Main Street. I am so sure of EXCAVATOR’S in-field results, I’m shipping each of 700 farmers enough to treat 25 acres so they can test it on their own ground,” Eviston said.

“We’ve hired a small army of interns to visit those farms to pull soil tests to document results,” he said. “We are sure once farmers see the big ROI (return on investment), they will want EXCAVATOR on all their acres.”

Joe Gednalske, Meristem’s Senior Product Development Lead, said the proprietary surfactant blend quickly takes Excavator deep inside the pith of the residue. “That’s when the value of our six specially developed microbes deployed in very high numbers of CFUs (colony forming units) is expressed, when those microbes wake up in the residue, multiply and begin their work.” Gednalske, whose name is on more than 30 other crop input patents, says another aspect of the product is its ability to tank-mix well with herbicides and remain stable through application all the way to its end-use.

“A unique surfactant combined with fulvic acid is the carrier system for six different microbes, all dormant and stable in liquid right up to the time they hit the residue,” Gednalske explained. “It’s new, it works very well, and we have a patent on the system.”

Justin Ogle, precision ag consultant, farmer and co-founder of Record Harvest, Nevada, Mo., has done some rigorous in-field testing with the new EXCAVATOR and said results from the new material have been quite impressive.

“It’s reducing residue a lot in just a couple weeks and that’s without any use of nitrogen as a carrier,” he explained. “Every field has its own story, but we’ve got soil test results showing its often adding more NPK to those treated acres than we expected. More than 40 pounds of nitrogen, considerable phosphorous and way more than 40 pounds of potassium in some fields.” Mitch Schrock was one of Record Harvest’s farmers cooperating with side-by-side tests in a 50-acre field.

“I was a little skeptical we would see much of an increase, but I can’t argue with the numbers that came back from Midwest Lab,” says Schrock. “After that, I went ahead and sprayed another 200 acres with it last fall. On those acres, I won’t be adding any additional fertilizer in the spring – we will be able to avoid that expense.” He also plans to apply more EXCAVATOR with metribuzin in the spring.

While fertilizer costs bring the nutrient value into sharp focus, Rob McClelland, Meristem President and CMO says that’s only a part of the overall ROI. He lists four ways farmers can expect to win, and while results will vary, they could easily tally up to $113/acre:

• Breaking down residue faster will allow faster planting with fewer skips: $25/A.
• More nutrients available early, 30-40lbs. N, 5-10lbs. P, 35-40lbs. K: $55/A.
• Lighter residue means one less pass: $18/A.
• Breaks down carbon and increases organic matter: $15/A.

McClelland added that high fertilizer prices accelerate convergence of emerging issues that make the timing perfect for innovative biological answers of all kinds.

“Stronger hybrids and increased plant populations mean more residue, and biologicals are addressing that issue. There’s also an increased emphasis on soil health and carbon markets, as well as concerns for nutrient stewardship. We need biologicals to help us create the sort of sustainability we seek for American farmers – economic sustainability. A key mission of Meristem is to open up more acres to innovative answers and help more farmers win with new technology.”

Eviston said he understands some farmers still are leery of “snake oil,” and that’s why Meristem is sending out so many 25-acre samples. “High-yield farmers need to begin trying out some of these new approaches – these new products – that will help you make the most of the nutrients you do buy. This is the perfect year to try a new approach,” he said, then shared a quick list:

• “Of course, fight back by applying EXCAVATOR™ and releasing up to 40% more nutrients in time for early-season growth,” he said.

• “Then move away from blanket all-field fertilizer applications to more strip-till and in-furrow starters,” Eviston continues. “Field research with REVLINE HOPPER THROTTLE™ and the talc/graphite carrier system for biologicals is demonstrating a 6 to 8 bushel per acre yield bump.”

• “And consider new biologicals that make the most of every pound you put down – and at a fraction of the cost,” he adds. “Our REVLINE ADVANCED™ contains REVLINE™ plant growth regulators and our NUTRIFUEL™ with eight different microbes that boost plant health and nutrient availability.”

“Reducing waste in the channel and opening up a new pipeline for innovation that helps growers get a better ROI is key to our mission,” he said. “We want to help American farmers better compete in a global grain market and that means giving them a chance to keep more of every dollar they earn.”

American Agri-Women Call to Rescind Arbitrary Water Rule

Fillmore, Ill. (AgPR) Feb. 7, 2022 — American Agri-Women (AAW) call the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to rescind the proposed Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS).

“The proposed WOTUS rule exposes farmers to arbitrary and confusing case-by-case determinations,” said Heather Hampton+Knodle, President of American Agri-Women.

The proposed rule features an overreaching, expanded definition of the qualifications of WOTUS to include ephemeral drainage paths, low drainage areas, artificial ponds, and ditches. In addition, the proposed rule removes exemptions for several agricultural related activities. These changes would lead to increased regulations, complex permitting, and increased costs.

Hampton+Knodle said, “Given the Agency's past abuse of their authority under the Constitution and the Clean Water Act, AAW members are convinced this proposed rule will be detrimental to our livelihoods and ability to produce food, fiber and renewable fuels for our country.”

The letter emphasized that the proposed WOTUS rule fails to follow legal decisions and precedent set by the courts as well the intent of Congress. In contrast, the 2020 Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR) provides clear and concise definitions and regulations that follow the law.

Gayle Baker, P.E., AAW Issue Lead for Water Quality, said, “I work with farmers that are trying to achieve Prior Converted Cropland determinations, which under this proposed rule, would not have the previous exemptions regarding the ‘Change of Use’ policy. This, as well as other exemptions that are no longer included in the rule, would restrict farming activities and regulate farming and ranching operations. It is so important that AAW’s voice is heard on this proposed rule.”

AAW expressed concerns that the proposed rule removes the power to administer the Clean Water Act from the states and prescribes limited management practices that will stifle innovation and best solutions for site-specific sustainability.

The AAW letter concludes, “One thing is clear: even though America’s farmers and ranchers care about the land, care for it because it is paramount to our livelihoods and our nation’s food security, and we continue to innovate our farming methods based on science and research, the Agencies and the proposed rule will make it more difficult to improve the land and water practices, thereby hampering our self-sufficiency and potentially leading to negative impacts on our land and water due to bureaucratic interference.”

Meristem and Talc USA Team Up
to Develop New Products

Columbus, Ohio (AgPR) Feb. 8, 2022 — Meristem Crop Performance Group (www.MeristemAg.com) and Talc USA, (www.TalcUSA.com), have joined forces in a strategic product development agreement focused on using Talc USA’s world-class talc-graphite seed fluency platform to deliver a wide-range of new in-furrow products to boost crop performance and reduce crop nutrition costs.

“We started working with Talc USA about a year ago and are excited to formally expand our relationship,” says Mitch Eviston, Meristem Founder and CEO. “Talc USA has more than 10 years of research showing how their superior seed lubricants not only improve seed placement and crop stand but are a very effective and convenient way to carry beneficial technologies directly to the furrow.”

Eviston says the initial collaboration has produced HOPPER THROTTLE™ an enhanced planter box treatment for both corn and soybeans. The system combines 80/20 talc graphite, micronutrients, and biologicals packaged to make the farmer’s life easier, provide yield increases of 4 to 8 bu./A and reduce overall fertility costs. Since 40 percent of farmers do not use a liquid in-furrow system on their planters, Eviston says collaborating with Talc USA is critical to ensure that farmers can tap into new beneficial technology in a way that fits how they farm.

“Efficiency and effectiveness are at the forefront of all of my decisions,” says Brian Armstrong, who farms near Ogallala, Nebraska. “Our CCS planters require a high-quality seed lubricant to operate effectively, and HOPPER THROTTLE is exactly that, and the efficiency of combining talc with a microbial product just makes sense.” Armstrong says time is the key issue during planting season.

“The ability to apply the biologic package desired, at the proper time, with no additional equipment or labor is essential,” he says. “Meristem produces great products with a commonsense approach and I’m looking forward to using their products again this year.”

Steve Johnson, founder and CEO of Talc USA, says the alliance with Meristem will boost introduction of promising microbial solutions into the marketplace faster and extend the reach of beneficial products to more farmers. “As a farmer myself, I am always looking for ways to improve efficiency and grow a bigger crop. This led us to spend more than a decade researching the fluency technology that helps planters perform at their best and increase yields with active ingredients delivered to the seedbed. I am thrilled to expand our product portfolio with Meristem and our key partners and tap into their growing dealer network.”

Eviston says it’s another big step forward in Meristem’s mission to create a pipeline connecting the latest R&D to 20 million row-crop acres and beyond. “We believe this can be the ultimate carrier for both synthetic and biological active ingredients that will improve plant health, drive rapid emergence, improve nutrient use efficiency and control harmful pests,” he says. ‘Our network of Meristem farm business dealers is expanding rapidly and provides a streamlined path to aggressively grow the enhanced planter box treatment market.”

With record high fertilizer costs looming over the 2022 planting crop season, Eviston says there’s never been a more urgent time for new products that help farmers make the most of every dollar they spend on fertilizer. That’s why a specific area of product development will focus on microbes added to seed fluency products that help plants fix nitrogen and release phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients.

“We can help growers trim their fertilizer bills substantially and still gain high yields,” he says. “The fertilizer industry has over-consolidated to the detriment of the American famer and it’s time to fight back with the use of biologicals. That has certainly fueled our energy to launch several new biological products, such as EXCAVATOR™ and REVLINE ADVANCE™ which are designed to help farmers reduce the use of traditional synthetic fertilizers in some cases. And with Talc USA’s help, we’ll be able to put more into the pipeline.”

DEI and TerraMax Team Up to Help
Farmers Leverage Plant Nutrition

DEI Will Now Carry MicroAZ-IF™ and TerraMax’s Proven
Nutrient-enhancing In-furrow Biologicals

Westfield, Ind. (AgPR) Feb. 7, 2022 — Direct Enterprises, Inc. (DEI) and TerraMax, Eagan, Minn., announced a new strategic marketing agreement here today. Under the agreement, DEI will now carry TerraMax’s unique in-furrow product, MicroAZ-IF, a biological shown to enhance nutrient take-up and plant vigor in corn and soybeans.

“TerraMax is known for their ability to assure the stability of these beneficial microbes from origin all the way to their contact with the germinating seed in the soil,” said Bill Haubner, DEI co-founder and president, in sharing news of the collaboration. “MicroAZ-IF is a great tool for farmers to use in stretching their nitrogen dollars as prices have nearly tripled in some areas.”

“We’ve spent 20 years testing and refining our proprietary stabilization process to ensure our microbes are delivered to the market alive and ready to work,” says Tom Proepper, chief operating officer (COO) of TerraMax. “DEI has a reputation for delivering quality products and services all the way to end-use in the field and we are excited by the opportunity to push this beneficial technology out to even more farmers.”

With two different strains of Azospirillum, explains Doug Kremer, founder and CEO of TerraMax, MicroAZ-IF is able to harvest and fix atmospheric nitrogen so that it can be used by the plant and exude plant-like compounds that stimulate root development for improved nutrient uptake and increased yields. Once the planted seed germinates and the roots start to develop, the bacteria attach to the roots to enhance vigor.

“Our agreement with TerraMax is another step in our effort to bring the latest quality products to dealers and growers,” says Dennis Tauchen, co-founder and COO of DEI. “In research conducted and published by Beck’s Hybrids, TerraMax MicroAZ-IF Liquid™ brought a 3 bu./A. yield increase and a three-year average of $15.61/A. ROI (return on investment) compared to their control. That’s more money in the pockets of farmers.”

DEI, well known for their custom seed treatment blends of hard chemistry, growth promoters and flowability agents was the first to bring CeraMax™ to U.S. growers last year. CeraMax™ is a biological proven to be very effective in the fight against Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) in soybeans.

Now entering their 26th year of business, Haubner and Tauchen recently launched what they call a “Seeding Success Initiative” designed to further improve their integrated approach to quality through lab testing, field research and precise, customized blends.

“Seed dealers and farmers are looking for the best ways to grow their crops and care for their families and land season after season,” explains Tauchen. “And, we are redoubling our efforts to come alongside them to help.”

“Farmers aren’t standing still, and we can’t either,” adds Haubner. DEI, he says, is gearing the new customer service initiative with four pillars of activity:
• Bringing more new seed enhancement solutions to market.
• Adding uniformity to in-house laboratory testing of new offerings.
• Increasing in-field research and more uniformly sharing results.
• Cementing leadership as expert integrators of proprietary products, custom-blends and seed treating equipment.

“We’ve built our reputation on high-quality products and great customer service over the past 25 years,” says Haubner. “We want to take steps now to assure that we will continue to improve in these coming years.”
