Single Vehicle Accident Involving 18-Wheeler in Merkel, Texas

On December 3, 2025, at approximately 3:57 p.m., the Merkel Police and Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler rock and gravel hauler at the intersection of FM 126 and South 11th Street.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the commercial vehicle was traveling northbound on FM 126 and was entering the city limits when the driver, failing to maintain speed, lost control while navigating a curve. This resulted in the vehicle overturning onto
its passenger side. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident.

The Merkel Police Department extends its gratitude to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office and the Taylor County, Precinct 2, Street and Road Crews for their prompt assistance in cleaning up the road debris following the accident.

In light of this incident, the Merkel Police Department is actively working to enforce traffic safety measures throughout our community. We are addressing the numerous complaints we have received from citizens regarding the reckless and speeding behavior of
commercial vehicles in and around our neighborhoods.

We are collaborating with our partner agencies, including the Department of Public Safety and the Taylor County Sheriff, as well as the Texas Department of Transportation, to enhance compliance and enforcement due to the increased volume of commercial vehicle
activity resulting from several major construction projects in the area.

The safety of our community remains our highest priority as we navigate these new challenges. We are thankful for the continued support from our citizens as we work together to ensure our roads are safe for everyone.

For further information, please contact the Merkel Police Department.
