Before Spain arrived, Filipino women held rights the colonizers would spend 300 years systematically removing. Lakambini — high-ranking women in pre-colonial Tagalog society — could own land, lead trade, govern communities, perform sacred rituals, and inherit property independently of their husbands. The babaylan were spiritual leaders. Women's voices were part of governance. Spain replaced all of this with the doctrina. None of it was primitive. All of it was erased.

On the island of Siquijor, there is a balete tree so old that the roots have grown into a living room. The mananambal — the traditional healers of Siquijor — have practiced plant medicine beside trees like this for centuries. Spain tried to call it witchcraft. The healers kept healing. Their knowledge of Philippine medicinal plants is among the most complete surviving bodies of pre-colonial folk medicine in Southeast Asia.

For decades, Filipino activists and senators demanded the removal of US military bases from Philippine soil. Clark Air Force Base had been on Luzon since 1903. It was the largest US overseas air base in the world. On June 15, 1991, Mount Pinatubo buried it under two feet of volcanic ash in a single afternoon. The US evacuated 14,500 personnel and their families. The American flag came down on November 26, 1991. Clark was turned over to the Philippine government. The volcano did in one day what 90 years of colonial presence had resisted.

She's been in Las Vegas for 20 years. She helped build this city in a hospital, in a casino, in a classroom. And in October 2025, for the first time, the city put her community's name on a sign. Filipino Town, Las Vegas. It took 50 years of Filipino presence in Nevada to get here. The sign is new. The community is not.

On December 16, 2021, Typhoon Odette made landfall in Siargao — one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded to hit the island. It killed 580 people. It displaced over 1 million more. The beaches and coconut groves that made Siargao famous were stripped bare in hours. The communities behind those famous beaches — the families, the fishermen, the barangay workers — lost everything. Siargao is still rebuilding. Their story did not end when the travel content came back.

Melissa Roxas is a Filipino-American human rights worker from Los Angeles. In May 2009, she was abducted in Pampanga while doing health work in a rural community. She was held and tortured by Philippine military elements for 18 days before being released. She is an American citizen. The US State Department issued statements. No one in the Philippine military was ever charged. She survived. She came home. She kept working.

In October 1587, a Spanish galleon called the Nuestra Señora de Esperanza anchored in what is now Morro Bay, California. Among the crew were Filipino sailors — Luzon Indios press-ganged into service on the Manila-Acapulco route. They stepped ashore. They were the first Asians ever documented to set foot on the North American continent. This happened 33 years before the Mayflower. Most Californians have no idea.

The granddaughter's face says everything. She does not fully understand what is in the pot yet. But she will learn — because lola will not stop cooking it. Dinuguan. A pre-colonial Filipino stew made from pork and pig's blood, slow-cooked in vinegar and garlic. The Spanish could not stop Filipinos from eating it. The diaspora brought it to New Jersey. It still tastes like home.

Red-tagging in the Philippines means the government labels you a communist or terrorist — without trial, without evidence, without due process. Since 2018, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict has red-tagged teachers, lawyers, journalists, nuns, farmers, and activists. Several people red-tagged by NTF-ELCAC have subsequently been killed. The label is a death sentence. This is still happening in 2026.

In October 2025, Las Vegas officially opened Nevada's first Filipino Town — a cultural district along South Maryland Parkway, the heart of the largest Filipino-American community in the state. Over 250,000 Filipinos call Southern Nevada home. They are the largest Asian group in the state. They built the casinos. They staff the hospitals. They run the schools. And for the first time, the city put their name on a street sign.
