While printing masters earlier, I jotted down a few things I'd like to see improved upon in 2015, and they're listed below. What do you want the new year to bring for music?

-More creative and effective drum triggering (when needed), and an emphasis on getting good live drum sounds first. Sample reinforcement isn't a bad thing, but less reliance on the stock sounds included in software would be nice. Make your own samples, and remember that it's sample reinforcement!

-Heavy limiting and compression on mixes was down in 2014, which is great. But there are other stereo buss effects that could still be used more judiciously- namely EQ, "exciters", stereo imaging tools and other things that can drastically alter a mix and limit the potential for mastering to improve rather than correct.

-More female engineers! I hate that audio engineering is so male-dominated-we all have ears. I'd love to see a more balanced demographic in the future, and I hope that 2015 will take (or continue) an upward trajectory toward this goal.

-A better understanding of time constraints when pressing vinyl. 2014 was dominated by "vinyl comeback" stories, and for many it's a new medium that isn't fully understood. Knowing the limits of what you can put on a side of vinyl is critical to a good sounding record, and I hope that in 2015 I don't have as many "you'll need to cut songs to make it fit" talks.

-Improved tuning and acoustic treatment in monitoring environments. If you're serious about making progress in audio engineering, you've got to learn to trust the room before your ears. With so many mixes being done at home, in improvised spaces, or on headphones, this is an area that could benefit from a bit of attention, and the quality of mixes will naturally get better.

-A return to simplicity. Some of the best recordings are the ones that just make themselves, and they start with a good performance. While you work audio, remember that time spent making lateral moves is time that counts against perspective.
