The Hunt Report is coming to an end 🏹

After a lot of thought, I've decided to sunset The Hunt Report.

When I originally built THR, the goal was pretty simple: make Arizona's OTC harvest data easier for hunters to view and understand on their phones. At the time, the official harvest tracker was essentially a large spreadsheet that wasn't particularly convenient to use on mobile, so I built the tool I wished existed.

Fast forward to today, and Arizona Game & Fish has just released a completely redesigned Harvest Tracker that makes the information significantly easier to access and use.

Though I have to admit... the new tracker looks kind of familiar. 😉

The layout, filters, and overall way the harvest information is presented are remarkably similar to what I've been building with The Hunt Report. I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions about that, but either way, I'm genuinely happy to see AZGFD making this information easier for hunters to use.

Unfortunately, the changes to their data system also broke the connection THR used to pull real-time harvest information. Rebuilding that system would require a significant amount of time and ongoing cost, and with the official tracker now accomplishing the original goal of THR, I've decided that continuing the project doesn't make sense.

So rather than try to compete with the official source, I'm going to let The Hunt Report ride off into the sunset.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who downloaded the app, used it during their hunts, shared it with other hunters, left reviews, sent me feedback, and especially the businesses who supported the project.

What started as an idea to make a frustrating spreadsheet easier to use turned into a real app with hundreds of hunters using it. That's something I'm incredibly proud of.

The Hunt Report accomplished exactly what I set out to accomplish. And now, the organization that provides the data has built a much better way for everyone to access it.

Is mule deer pre-season scouting actually worth it? 🦌

Short answer, yes. Here's why.

August OTC archery deer season draws a lot of hunters. The units fill up fast and pressure builds with every day that passes. Many hunters who tag out opening weekend didn't get lucky, they knew exactly where the bucks were before opening morning.

Mule deer in August are especially habitual. Heat locks them into a predictable routine. Shade, water, repeat. Scout your water sources while nobody else is out there, glass early mornings, and note where they're bedding. By the time August 21st rolls around you're not looking for deer anymore, you're just executing.

Even if you can only get out there one or two days before the season starts, you'll have a big advantage over hunters who didn't. Public land gets noisier every day and the deer get warier with it.

One area left open in the entire state for bear, the Bradshaw Mountains, and nobody's punched a tag on a sow yet. With the heat, bears are likely laying low and moving early, but they're definitely out there.
