In 1920, Charles Ponzi offered Boston investors a deal to double their money in 90 days by taking advantage of differences in international postal coupon prices. His pitch seemed too good to pass up, and people quickly started investing, even draining their savings and mortgaging homes. By the summer, Ponzi’s company was making $1 million a week. But the truth was, Ponzi wasn’t actually buying the postal coupons. Instead, he was using money from new investors to pay old investors. When the Boston Post investigated, they found out Ponzi had only spent $30 on the coupons he claimed to have. In August 1920, the scheme collapsed, and investors lost $20 million – nearly $300 million in today’s money. Ponzi was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for mail fraud, and the term “Ponzi scheme” became a lasting symbol of financial fraud.
