Had a great night this weekend at in Coral Gables as a guest of my good friend Carlos of Carlos’s Food and Wine and Don Q rum

One of the very best mojito’s I’ve had in a long time using the fabulous Don Q 7 (paired with Ceviche), an excellent Don Q Reserva Especial black rum Manhattan (paired with fried pork belly and sweet corn puree), Don Q Gran Reserva Old Fashioned (with Rosemary encrusted Strip steak), and a Peach Mascarpone tart with rum espresso martini for dessert. We finished with a neat pour of some Don Q 2009 single cask.

did a wonderful job talking about why we rum geeks respect Don Q rum as much as we do while managing to keep it light and show how accessible the Don Q products are for everyone, regardless of rum experience. He discussed production mentions, commitment to quality (without using added sugar or additives), and how Don Q positions themselves as THE Puerto Rican rum of choice for Puerto Ricans (and for many outside the island just as well.)

Kudos to both Flemings and Don Q for a great partnership and pairings that highlighted the best qualities of both the food and drink, and a huge thank you to Carlos for the invite and the company. Cheers!

Round 2 - Fight! We’re back with the second entry in our series to determine the best daiquiri rums available on the market in the Rumcast Daiquiri Bracket.

This time, we’re breaking down the “modern” portion of the bracket. Compared to the “classic daiquiri” rums in round one, these rums are typically more flavor-forward, and often composed of both pot and column still rums from multiple countries. Some of them also feature aged (and unfiltered) components.

From heavy favorites like Probitas, to overlooked gems like Worthy Park Silver, to unavoidable bar staples like Planteray 3 Stars, to newcomers like Grander Cane Harvest, we put them all to the test to see what stood out and what disappointed.

Rumcast returns! This episode is something fun we’ve never done before: Kate Perry (La Maison & Velier) and Brett Kozinn (PM Spirits) presented us with 7 mystery samples that are all candidates for the next wave of Flag Series releases for the U.S. market.

We tasted through them together, debated our favorites, and attempted to guess origins before the exciting reveals, all while discussing all the factors that go into selecting rums like this for release. It was a super fun experience, and a cool sneak peek at what’s to come from La Maison & Velier.
