Progreso Weekly/Semanal is a bilingual, e-zine which strives to change our world perspective to one where a progressive agenda becomes the driving force and its geo-political focus is spun south to north. We are headquartered on two sides of one argument – Miami and Havana. Occasionally we gander north to see how Washington reacts to the war of words and propaganda that breaks out on both sides of the Florida Straits.

Where are they now? - Progreso Weekly

It was a week and a day before Christmas 2014. On that Dec. 17, President Barack Obama, at around noon time, had announced changes to Cuba policy on national television; simultaneously, Cuban President Raúl Castro had gone on Cuban television to announce steps taken with the Obama government to begin the long road of normalization. Both leaders realized, and stated, it would be a slow and careful process, but it was a moment of high hopes and big expectations.

Where are the Obama era millionaires from Miami now? They should be leading the charge against an administration willing to sink an island in order to get its way.

The true origin of the Helms-Burton Act - Progreso Weekly

Contrary to the widespread notion that the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), at the time the most powerful organization of the Cuban-American extreme right, had been a determining factor in the drafting of the law, the CPI study stated that they did not play a role in this process due to the stridency of their positions.

Implementation of Title III proves that there is real danger for the party in power in the upcoming U.S. elections for president.

Donald Trump, Mike Pompeo, and especially John Bolton remind of how much of a throwback to the era of American interventionism in Latin America this administration really is.

EXXON versus Cuba: Headed towards a legal marathon? - Progreso Weekly

Pedro Monreal: The search for explanations [for this lawsuit] could lead us to consider the following hypothesis: EXXON MOBIL’s lawsuit is part of a political plan –not just a legal one– to cancel a factor that is considered an obstacle that stands between the company and its access to the largest oil reserves on the planet, in Venezuela. They want to neutralize the Cuban government.

EXXON MOBIL's lawsuit may be part of a political plan to cancel what they consider an obstacle that stands between the company and its access to the largest oil reserves on the planet, in Venezuela.

Shame on Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and those who turn a blind eye to her hypocrisy - Progreso Weekly

That Ileana Ros-Lehtinen works at Akin Gump, Washington’s largest lobbying firm, and one that does business with Cuba, would not be very important to report under normal circumstances. But, let’s face it, Ileana is not just another employee, and this can’t be considered normal in the city where she once terrorized persons who dared show any sympathy towards Cuba and its people, including those who might simply be sending money to a needy mother.

That Ileana Ros-Lehtinen works at Akin Gump, a Washington lobbying group that does business with Cuba, would not be very important to report under normal circumstances. But Ileana's not just another employee.

From The Atlantic: "Mueller’s full report has not been made available to the public yet, so it’s not clear whether it sets forth everything the special counsel’s office learned over the course of its nearly two-year investigation—including findings about conduct that was perhaps objectionable but not criminal—or whether it is more tailored and explains only Mueller’s prosecution and declination decisions. But national-security and intelligence experts tell me that Mueller’s decision not to charge Trump or his campaign team with a conspiracy is far from dispositive, and that the underlying evidence the special counsel amassed over two years could prove as useful as a conspiracy charge to understanding the full scope of Russia’s election interference in 2016."

Trump feels at home with deviants and crooks - Progreso Weekly

Alvaro Fernandez: The truth is, Donald Trump does not care about Venezuela, Cuba, or Nicaragua. And to him, socialism and communism are just words he can manipulate to create fear and steer voters towards his false view of an “exceptional” America that’s never existed. Which, by the way, does not mean Donald Trump would think twice of invading Venezuela.

It's all about reelection. Trump's willing to fabricate a Bay of Pigs, but in Venezuela, or a fake national emergency on the Texas border. He's an illusionist desperate to divert the public’s view from the mess he’s already created.

Trump's playbook - Progreso Weekly

The similarities between Andrew Jackson and Donald Trump are almost eerie but they are not the result of a mystical connection or reincarnation. They reflect common threads in American history, a rot at the core, a foundational flaw, something that is impossible for most Americans to consider much less concede.

“His supporters adored his rough edges…” Reading those words you might think Trump is channeling the ghost of a former president.

The tornado and the new Cuba that takes shape - Progreso Weekly

January 27, 2019, marked a before and after moment regarding important issues that concern Cubans. For a group of persons living in Havana, it was one of the saddest nights of their lives.

A little over a week has passed since the sad event, and Cuba has changed forever. Let us embrace the wake of solidarity that the tornado has left.

The rich are different from you and I, Jazz age novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote. Yes, Ernest Hemingway replied, they have more money.
Both were right. Several things happened last week that showed both how different the rich are from you and I and how much more money they have.

Stepping out of line - Progreso Weekly

Jesús Arboleya: There’s a well-known tale that goes something like this. A gladiator is thrown into the arena to face a hungry lion while his feet and hands are tied. When the beast attacks, he is able to bite him in one ear and the lion roars in pain. The coliseum crowd starts yelling at him, calling him an abuser… That is, more or less, what is happening in Venezuela.

Venezuela stepped out of line, and over the past two decades the United States has gone after the Bolivarian Revolution.

FAKE NEWS: Sources: Pelosi to declare herself president of the U.S. - Progreso Weekly

Nancy Pelosi: "Trump has helped with this step we’re about to take. His decision with Venezuela has shown us that American democracy is NOW being re-defined. And the rest of the world better fall in lockstep… We ARE the policemen on the world beat; and what we say goes… because we know better.”

Sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, have told PW that Nancy Pelosi is expected to declare herself president of the United States.

Paul Krugman, NY Times columnist and Nobel Prize winner in economics, on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: I have no idea how well Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will perform as a member of Congress. But her election is already serving a valuable purpose. You see, the mere thought of having a young, articulate, telegenic nonwhite woman serve is driving many on the right mad — and in their madness they’re inadvertently revealing their true selves.

The Democrats have nowhere to go but left - Progreso Weekly

Harvey Wasserman in Reader Supported News: In the Age of Trump, the middle ground is gone. So while we use independent organizing to make the hard place of what we stand for irreducibly clear, the rock of inside organizing must crack open and transform the Democratic Party.

The diverse wave of millennial activists that has poured into the Congress is unprecedented. And the public support for real change – a Green New Deal – is undeniable.

Fake crisis, real harm - Progreso Weekly

Max Castro: The main objective of Trump’s vacuous speech was to shift blame from the White House to the Democrats in Congress for a real and present crisis of the president’s own creation, the government shutdown.

This week Donald Trump commandeered a few minutes of the television networks’ precious prime time for a speech in which he said nothing -- new.

Cuban migration in 2018 - Progreso Weekly

Jesús Arboleya: 2018 was a complicated year for Cuban migrants. Without officially announcing it the Donald Trump government has, in practice, suspended the migratory agreements of 1994, substantially affecting a flow that exceeded 20,000 persons per year.

What's most worrisome for Cuba are not the difficulties in travel as a result of U.S. policy, but that migration continues to be very high -- especially among young people of working age.

Then they came for the citizens - Progreso Weekly

Denaturalization is not new nor is it the most inhumane manifestation of the ongoing crusade against immigrants. That would be the caging of children. But the increasing numbers of denaturalizations are significant mainly as an indicator of an ever broader and increasingly radical right-wing ethnic cleansing project.

The U.S. government is now taking away the citizenship of certain people who have acquired it through the naturalization process, many who have lived here for decades, and deports them.

When self-employment is a sin - Progreso Weekly

In a country that mocks planetary statistics and boasts of numbers that are the envy of the first world because of its very low birth rate and its increasing life expectancy, no one really knows what will happen when all these people become older and unproductive and find themselves without shade to shelter them.

If there's a problem in Cuba's for the foreseeable future are the many self-employed without social security and no retirement to count on.

The felon in the White House - Progreso Weekly

This president is, rather than slayer of predators, the predator-in-chief, a predator for all seasons, against all living things.

He came to Washington to drain the swamp, he said. Two years later, the swamp is bigger than ever and he's created a bigger, more aggressive class of predators.

If it’s not a right, then what is it? - Progreso Weekly

Hanna was always a rebellious woman. She was a rocker, always at the now extinct Patio de María club with her black and wide pullovers, purple lips, very long hair, always worn loose. She had the enormous courage to assume her lesbian identity from the age of 14, a decision that ended her up in her grandmother’s couch when her parents threw the “deviant” girl out of the house.

A country with as many problems as this one has not found the time to once and for all rewrite this huge chapter of injustice and discrimination.

Manna in Havana - Progreso Weekly

I thought they were rumors, people babbling on the street. But in effect the shortage of flour was making itself felt. And then yesterday I heard a woman scream: “Juana, the world’s about to end. There’s no bread.”

The fact that there's a shortage is nothing new. The surprise factor is what will it be next? It depends on the season.
