First coachwhip snake on the property! This is a species I was expecting to see eventually here! After the cold night last night I figured it would be good weather this sunny morning to find basking snakes and I was right! Known for their exceptional speed and agility, they are diurnal hunters that rely on their keen eyesight to chase down prey such as lizards, small mammals, birds, and insects. Their long, slender bodies can reach lengths of up to 8 feet, with coloration that often transitions from dark brown or black at the head to tan or light brown toward the tail, resembling a braided whip. Despite their intimidating speed and size, coachwhips are harmless to humans and will usually flee if threatened. They play an important role in Florida’s ecosystems as efficient predators that help control small animal populations.
