In this episode of Living History with Alex, we sit down with Mr. John Cooper, a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1958 to 1960 before building a remarkable career in international banking and business.

Mr. Cooper shares how the patriotism he experienced growing up during World War II inspired him to continue through ROTC, earn his commission, and serve as an infantry officer. Although he was offered the opportunity to pursue a long-term Army career, he chose a different path that would eventually take him around the world.

One year ago, I started Living History with Alex with one simple dream: to sit down with veterans and local heroes, preserve their stories, and one day have the privilege of meeting a World War II veteran.

This week, that dream became a reality.

Not only did I have the incredible honor of interviewing Dr. Harold "Hal" Silberman, but I also got to work out with him, play a game of chess, and enjoy a wonderful lunch together.

At 101 years old, his wisdom, humility, and passion for learning are just as inspiring as his extraordinary service.

Serving aboard the USS Arkansas, Dr. Silberman took part in D-Day, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, witnessing some of the defining moments of World War II. After the war, he fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a physician and went on to dedicate his life to advancing medicine through clinical research.

It was an experience I'll never forget The National WWII Museum National WWI Museum and Memorial Museum of Military HistorySW FL Military Museum & Library

Thank you, Dr. Hal, for sharing your legacy with me. It was truly an honor to spend the day with you and help preserve your story for future generations.

I hope you'll join us this week for this very special episode. These stories won't be with us forever, and it's up to us to preserve them for the generations to come.
