❗Tropic Cinema to Close for the Summer❗

Key West's nonprofit movie theater, and one of the town's most beloved staples, will "temporarily close for the summer season," the Tropic's board announced today.

Industry-wide challenges have led to "declining attendance & revenue pressures" at movie theaters everywhere, due in large part to growing competition from streaming services, the announcement states.

In addition, the theater is losing its longtime executive director. After 9 years, Carla Turner is stepping down to relocate with her husband's job transfer.
The Tropic board members said they will use the summer to regroup, assess operations, explore new revenue options & find its next director.
No date was given for the theater's official closing date, but its website lists screenings through June 7. In their statement, board members urge patrons to watch the Tropic Cinema's social media pages.

❗ KEY WEST CONVICTED MURDERER DELMON WASHINGTON FOUND DEAD IN HIS CELL IN MIAMI DETENTION FACILITY
Authorities with the Florida Dept. of Corrections are still investigating Washington's death, which was confirmed Friday by the Monroe County State Attorney's Office.
A Key West jury in February found Washington guilty of second-degree murder for the July 2022 beating death of his girlfriend, Latisha Alce, in her Stock Island residence.
He was sentenced last month to life in prison and was being held in a Miami-Dade detention center awaiting permanent transfer to state prison.

From the The Rotary Club of Key West

Due to Saturday’s weather, the Key West Lighted Boat Parade downtown was bumped to today, December 14. We're happy to share that their event and our Stock Island Lighted Boat Parade at The Perry Hotel & Marina Key West, are both still full steam ahead 🙌

We've coordinated closely with the Key West event organizer to make sure everyone can enjoy both events. Our kids carnival begins at 3pm with the parade starting at 6:30pm. The Key West parade begins at 8pm, and several boats are participating in both events.

There's some confusion online suggesting people have to choose between the two events, which is not accurate. Please help us spread the word by sharing this with your friends, family, and especially on your social media accounts.

We're looking forward to a festive evening with a record-setting lineup of 12 beautifully lit boats at The Perry Hotel & Marina!

Thank you,

The Rotary Club of Key West

This just in from Keys Weekly’s Carol Tedesco:

The 34th Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade, originally scheduled for today, Saturday, December 13, has been postponed until tomorrow, Sunday, December 14, due to today’s inclement weather and forecasts of probable lighting. The beloved, dazzling nautical spectacle will take place Sunday, December 14, at 8:00pm at the Key West Historic Seaport, but be sure to come early to experience all the delights of the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights before the parade.

Check the Schooner Wharf Bar page for future updates.
