I was still pregnant when I lost my husband—and only a few days after our daughter was born, a police officer discovered a mysterious envelope outside my house.
I was seven months pregnant when my husband died.
One evening, we were sitting together on the couch, laughing over baby names and teasing each other about which one sounded best.
Less than twenty-four hours later, a state trooper stood on my doorstep and told me my husband had been killed in a terrible accident.
Everything after that felt unreal.
I barely remember the funeral.
I hardly remember the steady stream of relatives, friends, flowers, sympathy cards, and meals that appeared at my house.
For weeks, I kept telling myself the same thing.
I had to keep going for our baby.
When my daughter finally arrived, she became the reason I got out of bed each morning.
After losing my husband, holding her in my arms gave me something solid to cling to.
Someone still needed me.
Three days after giving birth, the doctors told us we could go home.
I was exhausted, grieving, and terrified of raising our daughter without her father, but I was also desperate to leave the hospital and begin whatever came next.
Then I turned onto my street.
Immediately, I knew something was wrong.
Several neighbors were standing outside their houses.
Nobody waved.
Nobody smiled.
Every single one of them was staring toward my property.
I followed their gaze.
And nearly stopped breathing.
My house was black.
Not just the front door.
The entire front exterior had been covered in thick black paint.
The porch.
The siding.
Even the white columns my husband had spent an entire summer carefully sanding and restoring.
Someone had painted almost everything overnight.
I sat motionless in the car, holding my newborn daughter against my chest as tears filled my eyes.
Who would do something so cruel?
More importantly, why?
There was no message painted on the walls.
No broken windows.
Nothing seemed to have been taken.
Just black paint covering the home where my husband and I had planned to raise our little girl together.
One of my neighbors had already contacted the police.
Several officers arrived soon afterward.
One photographed the house and checked around the property while another stood beside me asking questions.
Had my husband argued with anyone?
Did he have enemies?
Had either of us received threats?
Was there someone who might want to scare me?
I couldn’t think of anyone.
Then another officer walked toward the mailbox.
He opened it.
And froze.
“Ma’am…”
The change in his voice made my stomach tighten.
Still holding my baby, I walked slowly toward him.
Inside the mailbox was a small white envelope.
No stamp.
No return address.
No clue about who had placed it there.
Except for one thing.
My newborn daughter’s name was written neatly across the front.
By hand.
My heart began pounding.
Very few people even knew what I had decided to name her.
The officer studied the envelope for a moment before turning toward me.
“I think you need to see what’s inside.”
My hands trembled as I reached for it.
Because in that moment, one frightening truth became impossible to ignore.
Whoever had painted my house black hadn’t picked my home by accident.
They knew exactly who I was.
They knew where I lived.
And somehow…
They already knew my daughter’s name.
