“Warhol nailed American culture as no other artist ever did.”

For architect Peter Marino, art is more than an aesthetic choice. It’s a reflection of the values, obsessions and culture of a moment in time. From 17th-century Dutch still lifes to Warhol’s Coca-Cola bottles and Brillo boxes, Marino looks to art to tell the story of an era—and brings that same thinking into his own work.

“I try to put art in all of my projects to make it more relevant.” - Peter Marino

For decades, Peter Marino has shaped the language of modern luxury, creating landmark spaces for Chanel, Dior, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Cheval Blanc Paris. But behind the celebrated architect is an equally prolific collector whose lifelong relationship with art began in an unlikely way: being paid in Andy Warhol works while working for the artist early in his career.

“I became an architect because I wanted to produce work that would last,” Marino says. “But in my lifetime, so many things that I built have been destroyed. Architecture is more impermanent than people realize.” -Peter Marino

In our latest cover story, Marino reflects on a career spent bringing art and architecture into conversation, a personal collection spanning Warhol to Renaissance and Baroque bronzes, and the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton, where his vision for preservation, craftsmanship and cultural legacy has found its most personal expression.

He also shares the story behind his own bronze works, his nearly 500 artist commissions around the world and what he hopes will endure long after him.

“The Flammkraft Model D is different for many reasons, but first and foremost, it’s the aesthetics. It’s beautifully streamlined and tailored—it doesn’t look like your typical grill.” -Billy Ceglia
