"The Sip."

A swallow-tailed kite skims the water, beak breaking the surface for a fraction of a second before it banks back up into the sky. I spent two weekends chasing that window. It's not a perfect shot, but I was happy my patience paid off in capturing the moment.

Swallow-tailed kites do almost everything in the air. They drink, eat, and even mate on the wing, only landing to roost at night. By late summer these Florida breeders are staging for the flight to South America. Making the window to capture them even smaller.

One of the rarest creatures you'll ever encounter in Florida's backcountry. The Everglades mink! Incredibly elusive and barely photographed in the wild, the dry season is your best window to find one if you know where to look. One of the most cunning mustelids on the continent.

Watch as this river otter hauls her morning catch to the bank for a hard earned breakfast.

Otters are surprisingly picky eaters. They prefer slower, bottom dwelling fish, not out of laziness but pure efficiency. They also tend to eat headfirst, targeting the fattiest, most calorie dense parts of the fish first.

Check out these Sandhill cranes approaching me with their juvenile c**t!

Early morning, two Sandhill crane adults comb the wet grass with their c**t in tow, foraging as they go. They clock that I'm not moving, just watching. The family drifts closer and closer until they're strolling right past me, still working the grass for breakfast, completely unbothered!

Hayden Valley, Yellowstone, September 2020. I had pulled over to observe a couple bison off the road. It was my first time with a Canon and I had positioned myself up against a tree next to the truck.

Right after I got these recordings, a second group rumbled in from the east and crossed the road directly in front of me, calves running alongside them. An incredible encounter but a reminder that things can escalate quickly and it's important to be aware of your surroundings.

July is National Bison Month! Here's a bull at Rocky Mountain Arsenal enjoying a good ol' wallowing.

Wallowing looks like a good time, and it is, but it's also pest control, coat shedding, and during rut, a dominance display all rolled (hah) into one. Over time those same wallows carve depressions into the prairie that fill with rainwater and become wetland habitat for insects, amphibians, and birds. A bison rolls in the dirt and accidentally builds an ecosystem!

So grateful and blessed to be alive to witness the 250th birthday of the United States of America. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, and I know that firsthand. My family fled communism with nothing but the shirts on their backs, believing in the promise of the American Dream. I'm a first generation American, and this country gave my folks a chance at freedom they couldn't get anywhere else. I can't wait to see how much greater we grow in the next 250 years. "A republic, if we can keep it," said Benjamin Franklin. Happy Independence Day to all 🇺🇸🦅
