AITA For Canceling My Brother’s Honeymoon Hotel Because He Refused To Help Me Move After Everything I Did For Him?
My brother found out at the airport that his honeymoon hotel reservation had been canceled because I called the resort and took back the booking I paid for.
I (41F) gave my younger brother (34M) and his wife (32F) five nights at a resort as their wedding gift.
It cost me almost $3,000.
Three weeks before their trip, my landlord suddenly sold my building and I had to move quickly. I asked my brother to spend Saturday helping me pack and move furniture.
He said no because he'd already promised his wife they'd spend that weekend getting ready for the honeymoon.
That really bothered me.
Two years ago, when he lost his job, I let him live with me for four months. I covered groceries, utilities, everything. I also loaned him money for his car payment.
He paid the loan back eventually, but still.
I told him helping me move for one day was the least he could do.
He said my wedding gift shouldn't come with “secret conditions.”
That pi**ed me off.
The hotel was booked using my account, so I called and canceled it. The refundable portion went back to my card.
I didn't tell him.
They landed Sunday night and apparently stood at the front desk for almost an hour before realizing they had no reservation.
Every nearby hotel was insanely expensive, so they ended up flying home the next morning.
Now my entire family is furious.
My brother says I intentionally destroyed his honeymoon over one Saturday.
I keep explaining that I didn't destroy anything. I simply stopped paying for a luxury vacation for someone who couldn't spare six hours when I needed him.
My mom says gifts stop belonging to you after you give them.
Maybe technically.
But I feel like family should go both ways.
