Following the death of Josip Broz Tito, economic crisis, nationalism, and growing political tensions accelerated the breakup of the country. The declarations of independence by Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina were followed by wars, sieges, forced displacement, and campaigns of ethnic cleansing.

In 1995, Srebrenica became the most horrifying symbol of the conflict, but the collapse of Yugoslavia would still bring further episodes of violence.

How did one country end up divided by wars between communities that had shared the same land for decades? Watch the full video, share your thoughts in the comments, and send it to someone who wants to understand this history.
