It’s pub day at Tra Publishing—A HOLE IN THE WHOLE is out now!

A one-of-a-kind meditation on color and context, A Hole in the Whole by artist Eleonora Marton delights in the unexpected elements of life that make us whole.

Inspired by Ruth Krauss’s A Moon or a Button, this artist’s book presents over thirty-seven pairs of identical circles, each set contrasted in size, meaning, and color. Marton’s accompanying text explores the surprising connections—or imaginative leaps—between them. With its playful yet profound juxtapositions of light and dark, serious and silly, this color-drenched journey invites readers to pause, reflect, and see the world anew.

Featuring an exposed spine, cardboard cover, and sprayed edges, A Hole in the Whole is perfect for fans of wordplay and slightly absurd.

‘A Hole in the Whole’ is now available everywhere books are sold!

Meet the Contributors: Michael Bay

When most people hear “Transformers,” they think of the blockbuster films released between 2007 and 2014. But before it was a big-budget action extravaganza, Transformers began as a series of shape-shifting action figures. In 1984, American toy giant Hasbro partnered with Japanese company Takara to roll out a line of “robots in disguise” that were “more than meets the eye.” Hands down, the most beloved is Bumblebee—a neon-yellow Chevrolet Camaro that morphs from a sports coupe into a 20-foot-tall robot. Originally, Bumblebee was a cuddly yellow VW Beetle or a 1977 Camaro, but neither fit the amped-up new generation. Director Michael Bay wanted something more modern, muscular, and cool.

After a call from Spielberg, Bay went to Hasbro for a deep dive into Transformers lore and then to GM’s Skunk Works, a secret facility for new designs, where he saw the new Camaro. Choosing the right car for each Transformer was an iterative, threefold process, says Bay: “You have to design the robot, find the right size of the car, and figure out the personality because you’re making characters.”

Happy Birthday, Leo Tolstoy!

Leo Tolstoy, Russian writer, is best known for his novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878). Although the world’s greatest novelist was a courageous man, his heart responded with pain and excitement to almost everything—whether poems and prose by fellow writers or hunger in the surrounding villages, not to mention family affairs. By his example, Leo Tolstoy showed that boys do cry, can express their feelings, nurture others, and embrace everything they love.

Celebrate the timeless legacy of a man who embraced it all with ‘100 Reasons Why Leo Tolstoy Cried,’ a unique and extremely compelling overview of Leo Tolstoy imparts meaningful insights into life, literature, and love.

We’re happy to announce that OCTOPUSES HAVE ZERO BONES is among the finalists for the 2025 Piccolo Galileo Prize! Here’s what the jury is saying:
“A book that has already become a classic of popular science for children and adolescents and that can speak to all ages. A journey to discover the nature of numbers, starting with the title’s zero, going against the grain of conventional treatment that relegates it to last place. Yet it is with the absence of zero that other numbers acquire meaning. The idea of combining each issue with other concrete elements of the natural world is very effective, and the reader is guided to discover them through illustrations of the highest quality and originality.”

This species of hummingbird from Cuba is the smallest bird in the world.

The bee hummingbird is barely 2 inches long. It can consume half its body weight in food. Of course, that’s not much, as it only weighs 1/2 to 1 ounce. Of course, that’s not much, as it only weighs 1/2 to 1 ounce.

Like its other hummingbird cousins, is a highly skilled flyer. It can turn in all directions and hover in the air like a helicopter. This means it can feed on flowers that can’t be reached by other animals. Hummingbirds don’t need a perch — they just hover in front of the flower and eat!

Their main source of food is nectar, the sweet and nutritious juice of flowers. Nectar is quick and easy to digest (it only takes 15 minutes) so it passes straight into the bird’s intestine after they eat it. The hummingbird only uses its stomach if it eats an insect or a spider.

At Tra, we believe that the tactile process of holding and reading a book is a mindful experience. Particular emphasis is placed on the physical components of the bookmaking process, resulting in books that are works of art and modes of expression in and of themselves.

In ‘A Hole in the Whole,’ we incorporated an exposed spine to pay homage to the original artist book. In book binding, an exposed spines refers to a binding style where the book’s spine is left uncovered, revealing the stitching, glue, or sewing structure that holds the pages together. Unlike traditional case binding, which hides the spine under a cover, an exposed spine allows the binding technique to become part of the book’s design. This approach gives a handcrafted, contemporary look while allowing the book to open flat more easily.

Our Story

At Tra, each book is a unique experience, meticulously designed and fabricated in response to and with utmost respect for the contents. Tra works closely and often collaboratively with artists and writers to create books about fine and decorative arts, architecture, and design that inspire social, cultural, and environmental awareness. Particular emphasis is placed on the physical components of the bookmaking process, resulting in books that are works of art and modes of expression in and of themselves.

Tra was founded in 2016 in Miami by Swiss-born graphic designer and author Ilona Oppenheim. The publishing company builds on fifteen years of design excellence through Ilona Creative Studio, Oppenheim’s creative consultancy firm. The impetus for Tra was to create beautiful, substantial, and special books that readers experience physically, as opposed to digitally. “In today’s world of excess and technology, we believe that the tactile process of holding and reading a book is a mindful experience that creates a real connection to life,” Oppenheim says. “We want our readers to appreciate details such as the beauty of color on paper, and we want people to share these books with their friends and family.”

Tra’s design aesthetic is one of restraint; the images and words on the pages take precedence. Tra’s award-winning designers treat each title as an entirely original expression—in essence, there is no typical Tra book. The firm works with carefully selected bookmakers around the world and places a premium on ethical bookmaking practices and materials. Once a book is published, the relationship continues; Tra goes beyond traditional publicity practices to bring the contents of each title to life in additional ways, such as through exhibitions, events, and workshops. Tra is passionate about books, and passionate about the contribution each book can make. As part of that commitment, proceeds for many of Tra’s titlesare donated to environmental, arts, and activist organizations.
