Arttechouse Miami: Multimedia artist Refik Anadol says he was profoundly shaped by Blade Runner. We can tell! Want to see more of the exhibit?

Ian can related, since he loves both Blade Runner movies too! So he was in heaven in this exhibit surrounded by an extremely cyberpunk vibe. I was also blown away by the visualizations. They aren’t just pretty pictures — these are actually data translated by computers into visual representations. The result is surprisingly organic and living.

Our Pick: “Favorite View of the Rhine”
🔹
This is the view of the Rhine Gorge (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) from the Marksburg Castle fortress between Koblenz and Bingen, Germany. It is one of 40 castles between the two cities! Why so many castles in such a relatively short stretch? Germany wasn’t a unified kingdom until relatively recently, and during the Middle Ages, this stretch of the Rhine was both a rich traderoute and the hills easily defensible. So many small kindoms were established — many of whom lived off ‘tolls’ they enforced on river traffic using spiked chain barricades across the river.
🔹
This stretch of the Rhine features in a wealth of Germanic legends and was a featured location in Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle operas in the opera Götterdämmerung (which is a Germanic interperetation of the Norse armageddon Ragnarok).

Our Pick: "Coolest Coffeeshop Graphic Design, Gdansk (Poland)"
🔹
Drukarniacafe is a small coffee shop in a corner of the old town center. What makes it distinct is that every detail of the space -- from the tables and walls to the porcelain saucers feature custom designs that feature strong modernist bauhaus-like graphics by the owner. In addition, they go beyond espresso and drip coffees to feature modern coffee preparations like V-60 Chemex and Nitro brewing.
🔹
It was a lovely, peaceful time-out between hectically traversing the crowded center of the old town!

Our Pick: "Most Photographed Castle in Scotland"
On the Isle of Skye sits an actually quite modest castle. Yet it's the most the most frequently photographed: Eliean Donan. This is partially due to the castle's status in popular culture as the fictional home of Clan Macleod in the film and television stories of the immortal Highlander. Until Outlander (with the possible exception of Brave Heart) this was likely the most internationally well-known production based in Scotland.
🔹
Fun Fact: The real ancestral castle of the Macleods is also on the Isle of Skye and close to Eliean Donan!
🔹
This 13th century structure was actually a fortification against Viking invasions of the "Sea Kingdoms" of the Scottish Isles, and thereafter passed among several forces over the centuries and ultimately burned in the Jacobite Risings.

International Women's Day: Two young women having a good time with the camera in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

In many areas in the world, women entrepreneurs are the backbone of an areas' economic life and empowering women in these areas can life up an entire community. One of the organizations we've been involved in and believe in strongly is Kiva.org.
🔸
Kiva is a micro-lending platform providing loans to entrepeneurs (for everything from a sack of seeds to a bicycle for deliveries) that are outside the world financial system simply because they are poor and in underserved communities. Many of these are women led micro-businesses. And the great thing is, that the loans are eventually paid back with a small amount of interest, allowing you to lend it out again and a little more. In that way, it's a giving multiplier that creates a web of uplift -- For example, some of an Indonesia farmer's repaid interest may go to a an aspiring coffee cart owner in El Salvador.

Kiva has been a great experience for us, and if you want to get started for Int'l Women's Day, you can visit:

Travel Obscura: GiorgiPorgi seems at first glance like it would be a ‘hidden’ coffeeshop unknown to anyone but locals and people in the neighborhood. And in fact, talking to the owners a couple of years ago that was their goal — they were quite clear they weren’t looking to promote. They don’t even have a sign.
🔹
Since then, Instagrammers have had a different idea, as the IG community has been relentlessly taking photos of this photogenic coffeeshop built out of what is essentially a cement tunnel in downtown L.A. The moss walls, industrial chic and well designed lighting and bar all demand to be documented. (oh, and the coffee is good too).

"Relax, You're in the Keys": South Florida is more than Miami. Head south into Monroe County and you hit the Florida Keys. Amara Cay in Islamorada is a newer resort, with a modern, low-key elegant design. Looking at the photo, wish we were back here! 🏖

Our Pick "Innovative Ensemble" (Miami): The Nu Deco ensemble in Miami is justifiably becoming ever more recognized for it's skill, showmanship and unique (sometimes downright avant-garde) artistic direction
🔹
Each performance typically has a featured collaborating artist and several guests per concert -- often revolving around a theme. Their artistic director/CEO, Sam Hyken, will usually premiere a piece that he composed and arranged at the performance to be conducted by his co-founder and co-artistic director Jacomo Rafel Bairos. Many of these pieces are tributes to their musical influences and artists.

The photos are from the recent 2019 season concert focusing on women composers and performers. Pictured are:
