Investigators with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division claim Duke University School of Law used diversity-focused essays and application “tags” to produce admissions advantages for members of certain races.

“Duke Law School doesn’t get a free pass to discriminate against white and Asian students simply because it thinks it has good intentions,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said in a statement.

A Duke University spokesperson said the school is "committed to complying with the law and will continue to do so in a manner that is consistent with our academic mission."

Some Southeast-founded midsize firms saw their lobbying revenue increase by as much as 50% in the first half of this year.

Among the firms are Jones Walker, which lobbied for a port authority on Florida's Atlantic coast, and Balch & Bingham, which lobbied for Florida-based energy company Holtec International.

Experts say midterm elections and major appropriations bills were among likely factors in overall lobbying spend.

In her bid to oust Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mavel Ruiz, managing partner Destiny Alvarez of Goede, DeBoest & Cross, PLLC in Coral Gables has brought in maxed-out contributions from more than two dozen political action committees.

So what is driving the interest in a typically low-key judicial race?

“You’re not going to garner this kind of attention because a state court judge has slow response rates, and they’re not clearing their docket," said Charlton Copeland, a professor at the University of Miami School of Law.

Ruiz came into the limelight last year while presiding over a land use challenge tied to the planned Donald Trump Presidential Library.
