Yinka Shonibare “Venus de Arles” 2018
Perez Art Museum, Miami (PAMM)

Based on the ancient Greco-Roman statue Venus de Arles, Shonibare recreates it covered in “African” fabric that was actually mass-produced by Dutch trading companies based on Indonesian designs to sell to West Africa, as well as westerners looking for “aexotic” fabrics. This (along with other details like the Dutch wax globe instead of a head) comment on the history of Western colonialism in Africa

This piece is part of the “Allied with Power” exhibition being held of the Perez collection of African diaspora art from Africa, Latin America (Brazil et. all) and the USA

Argentine-style empanadas have a distinctly buttery, flaky crust and a served (Fiorito) — a Miami restaurant named after a neighborhood in Buenos Aires. We had the outdoor seating all to ourselves (of course, only outside seating at this time!)

We could keep ourselves from taking so many images here! The exhibit is incredibly immersive. If you find yourself in Miami Beach, this is a must. Arttechouse is permanent, but this exhibition will be closing at the end of January.

A bit of Southeast Asia in Miami: Chef Andrew Zarzosa, owner and chef at Yuzu () has created an awesome culinary ‘travelogue’ of his time in Asia in the Miami Design District’s St. Roch Market foodhall. His dishes aren’t 1:1 precise recreations of the street food found throughout Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore et. all. But what makes his creations stand out in Miami is that he’s captured the aromas, taste, spirit and spices of the region in his food. It FEELS like home if you’re from that part of the world
🔸
Once you learn a little about him, this comes as no surprise. Miami-native Chef Zarzosa has studied his craft in prestigious kitchens in Jakarta, Borneo and Manila.

Architectural Beauty: Miami has exploded in it's cultural development in the last few years in particular, being named one of a handful of 'World Cities' in the U.S.

Because of this, we are spoiled with innovative, striking architecture in our city. Even this simple elevator to the public transport system (the ) is an example.

Miami Swag: This candid photo taken of patrons getting a haircut at a festival in Wynwood (of all places). This photo is a favorite of ours despite being less technically perfect because something about the characters in it captures the Miami vibe and swagger.

Miami Beach Whimsy: A very cool feature of the Miami Beach oceanfront are the brightly designed lifeguard stations -- each of which is unique. It's one of the details that lends the city it's unique look and artistic vibe.
🔸
One of the things visitors often don't realize is that a substantial portion of Miami Beach is actually artificially expanded barrier island brought into existence by the sheer determination of Carl Fisher -- a visionary (and bit of a huckster).
🔹
If you haven't read it, we highly recommend "Miami Babylon" by Gerald Posner as it details the alternately hilarious, glamorous, shady and downright criminal history of the building of Miami and Miami Beach.

"Miami Made": Just love this guy’s shirt (a play on the county’s name of Miami-Dade). Actually, people who are in fact ‘miami made’ are outnumbered by the population who were not born in Miami but have decided to make the city home. It’s one of the great things about the Magic City: you will bump into people from everywhere in the world — not just from Latin America and the Caribbean (of course!), but from everywhere from France to Dubai and parts inbetween.

"Relax, You're in the Keys": South Florida is more than Miami. Head south into Monroe County and you hit the Florida Keys. Amara Cay in Islamorada is a newer resort, with a modern, low-key elegant design. Looking at the photo, wish we were back here! 🏖

"Miami Culture Trip": One of the most innovative orchestras in the country calls the city home: the Nu Deco Ensemble. Combining symphonic arrangements with pop, avant-garde compositions and guest talent, their shows at the Miami Light Project (Miami Light Project) Light Box Theater is a must.
