Nine miles off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan, sits Hashima โ a rocky island barely 16 acres across, now completely abandoned.
๐ข In the early 1900s, Mitsubishi discovered coal beneath the seabed here and built an entire city on the rock to mine it. They ringed it with towering sea walls and packed it with high-rise concrete apartments, a school, a hospital, shops, and even a cinema
๐ฅ At its peak in 1959, more than 5,000 people were living on this speck of land โ a density of around 216,000 people per square mile, making it the most densely populated place on Earth at the time
๐ข From a distance, its wall of grey towers looks unmistakably like a battleship steaming out to sea, which earned it the nickname "Gunkanjima," or Battleship Island
๐ฐ๏ธ Then it ended almost overnight. When petroleum replaced coal, the mine closed in January 1974 โ and within just a few months, every last resident had packed up and gone
For over 40 years it's sat frozen in time, its buildings slowly crumbling into the sea, reclaimed by wind and salt. It's since become an eerie, world-famous ruin, even appearing as the villain's hideout in the James Bond film Skyfall.
A whole city built on a rock in the ocean, home to thousands โ silenced completely the moment the coal ran out. ๐๏ธ
