Iran Launches Massive Missile and Drone Assault on U.S. Warships as Middle East Crisis Spirals
Geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf have erupted once again after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale military operation targeting United States naval forces near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday (May 8, 2026).
In what is being described as one of the most dangerous escalations in recent years, Iranian forces reportedly unleashed waves of ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and explosive drones against U.S. military vessels operating in one of the world’s most strategic energy corridors.
Iranian officials said the assault was carried out in response to what Tehran called a violation of the ceasefire agreement by Washington. According to Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the United States allegedly attacked an Iranian oil tanker traveling from the coastal waters of Jask toward the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran also claimed that several other vessels near the waters of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, were targeted in the strikes.
Zolfaghari further accused the U.S. military of attacking civilian areas in Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island with support from “several regional countries.”
In retaliation, Iran’s Armed Forces launched what they described as a “precision joint operation” against U.S. destroyers east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of the port city of Chabahar.
The IRGC claimed the counterattack inflicted major damage. Iranian intelligence reports allegedly indicate that several American warships suffered severe damage, while three destroyers were forced to retreat from the conflict zone toward the waters of the Gulf of Oman.
Iranian state-linked media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency and IRIB, also reported that enemy military units sustained heavy losses and were pushed out of the operational area.
Washington, however, presented a sharply different version of events.
The U.S. military stated that it had already launched strikes on multiple Iranian military facilities on Thursday (May 7, 2026). American officials described the operation as a preemptive action after detecting what they claimed was an imminent Iranian plan to attack three U.S. destroyers in the Gulf region.
U.S. President Donald Trump, writing on his Truth Social account, claimed Iranian forces suffered devastating losses during the confrontation.
“Missiles were fired at our destroyers and were easily shot down. The drones came in and were burned out of the sky,” Trump wrote.
Amid the exchange of attacks, explosions were also reported around Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island, fueling fears that direct conflict between Iran and the United States has entered an extremely dangerous new phase — one that could threaten global stability and disrupt one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
