Lucy Joyce

British wildlife artist Lucy Joyce’s painstaking attention to detail is her signature on portraits of a variety of animals. Her artistry is crafted from photographic images and in some cases her own compositions, as she meticulously accounts for every hair and whisker.

β€œI did start drawing wildlife in pencil as well alongside the pets. Then when I started painting, I started to do more wildlife, but still again from photos generally. I'll either pick a photo that I really like. I just know instantly when I see a photo, whether I want to draw it or paint it. But sometimes I will make up the painting from many photos. I'll take lots of inspiration from all sorts of places and then build what I want. That takes up, I find that takes up a lot of energy, much more than, you know, with the pets, you're given a photo, so it's there in front of you and that's what you do. But when you're creating something from scratch, it's a whole different process.”

- Lucy Joyce.

FRIDAY FOCUS - Through the lens of Barbara Nitke

When Barbara Nitke discovered the world in which her photography would become an art form that would satisfy her creative ambitions she felt like she had arrived… β€œ...after like a decade of I don't know who I am and stumbling around and being interested in different things, I took French lessons, I played tennis, I did all kinds, you know, it was just [that] I couldn't find myself. So, when I found my subject and I had the camera, that's when I really got serious and I really wanted to be the best photographer that I ever could be.

β€¦β€œIt becomes like a little world of its own. It's only between you and the camera lens and doing the job, rightβ€½ And what you're focused on.It becomes very intimate no matter what the subject is, but what you're doing is going into a very intimate world.”

πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸŽ¨ MONDAY MOOD s1e9
Emma Gray

The British-born Emma Gray, a contemporary artist, art advisor, curator and gallerist is passionate about fostering and mentoring female artists by building private collections. Emma has been what she describes as a secret painter. A student of Reiki and of breath work, having studied healing and spirituality in Santa Fe. Emma focuses on energy and spirituality in her practice, working from the inside out.”

β€œI'm really, really interested in nature. I've always been interested in nature since I sort of really having that funny experience in Santa Fe when I was 21. But I feel that, and I also think it's from spending a lot of time in England, in the forests and places like Wales, where my mum had a cottage.

All trees and plants have an energetic field. And in some sort of folk laws and myths, there are a lot of plant spirits. And I'm inclined to believe that too.

And I feel like, I think the reason that there's, all my painting is set around different environments. Icebergs, forests, deserts, whatever it is, volcanoes. And I think the environment is very, very, very, very, very, very important.

And I think the climate is the most important thing. And I think the reason I keep focusing on it is, first of all, I love the beauty of it, but I also think that we have got to enter into a much greater harmony with the earth. And that I just think it's coming from there.”

COMING UP s3e19 Barbara Nitke:
TUESDAY SEPT 16 on AART

The American photographer Barbara Nitke joins Chris for a very candid conversation on next week’s episode of AART out Tuesday.

Barbara says: β€œI photograph exotic people who have fearlessly lived their lives. They are usually a little banged up around the edges, but that’s what I love about them.Β  My work has taken me from hardcore p**n sets in the early 1980s, into the B**M world in the 1990s, to the fashion world, and into a seedy motel room that I built as a set in my living room. I’m currently developing an independent feature film about a p**n star at the end of the Golden Age of Porn.Β  Over time I’ve evolved from classic fly-on-the-wall documentary photography, to constructing images that look like furtive caught moments, or scenes from movies. But throughout the years, my focus has remained the same – to make an intimate connection with each person I photograph.Β  My images humanize s*x workers, p**n stars, trans*xuals, hustlers, and a lot of other colorful people. I want to erase the boundaries between us and them, and show our deep connection to each other. Looking back over my work and what it means to me, the hardcore p**n work that started my career – the American Ecstasy series – seems more relevant now than ever. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we still haven’t come to terms with the place of s*x work, s*xual expression, and p**nography in our culture.”

πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸŽ¨ THROWBACK THURSDAY s1e33
Poppy Balser

Canadian artist Poppy Balser grew up on the picturesque shores of Nova Scotia where she adapted a love of the sea and maritime life, which would become her canvas.

β€œIn the summer, the house I grew up in, where my mom still lives, is right across the road from a long narrow bay. That's quite tidal, so at high tide, it's full of water. At low tide, the water is a mile away from the house. But anyways, once I was old enough to cross the road, I was allowed to go to the beach, and that's where I spent the majority of my summer for several years. I'd just get up in the morning and hop on my bike, and depending on which part of the beach I was going to or the shore I was going to, I would either bike to a spot where I'd leave my bike and go down to the shore… and I would ramble for hours. Then mom had this old Swiss cowbell on the back porch, and when it was time for breakfast or time for lunch or supper, she'd ring the bell. If I heard the bell, I had to get home.”

πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸŽ¨ AART OF THE DAY s1e23
Sarah Rossetti aka 'Invader Girl'

In 2004, Sarah lost her sister who was killed by a drunk driver. It was a tragedy that would change her life forever:

lβ€œShe died instantly. But it kind of started this quest of trying to understand more about life. And you're growing up with this massive amount of rage inside of you. I got to meet these wonderful people. So the military from across the world, you know, humans who have traveled everywhere, have seen so much and experienced a whole lot, including death. And so I kind of found the light in this really dark tunnel by meeting these people and hearing their stories and just getting to learn about their experiences and how they view life and how they do life. And then watching them like really fill out the edges of living. And it kind of helped me, you know, cope and get through that and grow and become. It was a long process. It took like 10 years to put all that together. But it started to, you know, it was so important to me. So I started painting because I, you know, just the stories were so important. It was like, how do we show people from from any background, any walk of life that you can heal, you can grow, even if it's super dark, there's a light somewhere like, don't give up, keep struggling, you know, try again.”

MONDAY MOOD: Chriscilla Browning, Food & Beverage Stylist
s3e8

Chriscilla Browning is drawn to colors and the light combining those elements to make her subjects look stunning, which results in a work of art.

β€œI like to figure out what makes or how you can make something look really beautiful by manipulating the light. And so I, I did play around with a lot of that, but I realized I was never gonna make it as a photographer because of the technical aspect of it. And there again, when I started an internship with a photographer, I quickly learned about these people who were just doing exactly that.

They were putting products in front of cameras and helping determine where the light hit but they weren't actually the photographer. And they were called stylist. And I was completely fascinated and blown away by that.”

FRIDAY FOCUS: Hannah Polskin
s3e18

Interdisciplinary artist Hannah Polskin thinks big when it comes to design and as an artist she is drawn to the nature of wood as the perfect medium for her art.

β€œI've always loved oversized works. But the thing with working with wood is it's readily available in these massive eight foot by four foot slabs and I just fell in love with them. I loved the heaviness and I loved getting splinters and I loved seeing the wood grain and the natural material and how it smelt and how it felt in my studio as I was painting. So I think just by gravitating towards wood, that sent me down a path of creating things at large scale because I wanted to expose as much of the wood as possible. So there'd be a really interesting knot in the wood over here, and then there'd be a cool zig-zaggy grain section at the bottom, and I wouldn't be able to choose which area I wanted to keep. So that really drove the decision to, okay, I'm making a six-foot piece, or I'm making an eight-foot piece.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY:
s2e30 Jamie Derr

Former singer turned poet and painter, Jamie Derr has a colorful cultural back ground with diverse influences. On this episode recorded in July 2024 she explains how they have inspired her work.

β€œI would say that when I look at a lot of that type of artwork, it's like an impressionist kind of thing that I saw in my grandmother's artwork. I do have a lot of, I would say I have like realism in there, and I think I definitely get, my father, when I saw his paintings, he was kind of more abstract. So he had like an abstract style, but there was a little bit of realism in there, but I definitely have more realism.”
