For the last 30 years, Regina Hilleary has specialized in creating custom frames for her customers’ cherished artwork and memorabilia at her shop in Marshall, Joan of Art. “A lot of people don’t know what goes on behind the scenes here — how much blood, sweat, and tears goes into it,” her coworker, Alice Beach, shares. “Everything is done by hand, and Gina is very good at what she does and puts 100% into it.” Read more about the shop and Hilleary’s journey in the June issue, available on stands or online now through the link in our bio.

“Witnessing for the first time the Virginia landscape carefully cultivated for over 60 years by Rachel ‘Bunny’ Lambert Mellon was like stepping into a springtime dream,” Dayle Wood, de Gournay’s editorial and U.S. marketing director, says of the inspiration behind the design company’s collaboration with Oak Spring Garden Foundation. “To us, it might look like an empty, overgrown field,” says October Greenfield, a member of the Piedmont Environmental Council and co-coordinator of the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative. “But to grassland birds, it’s home.” As encroaching development, agricultural intensification, and other land uses threaten native grasslands, that home is becoming harder for birds to find. But with organizations like VGBI, a collaboration spanning 16 counties across Virginia, efforts to catalyze wildlife conservation in Hunt Country have never been stronger. Since opening her first salon in Haymarket in 2017, owner Ashley Gray has developed a popular apprenticeship program to train aspiring stylists as well as achieved Green Circle certification for sustainability.
