A bittersweet experience photographing Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, for a commercial client.
Sterling College was founded in 1958 as a traditional boys' college preparatory school. From 1974 to 1982, it shifted its mission to environmental and agricultural education. In 1983, it awarded its first Associate of Arts degree, and in 1997, transitioned to a four-year baccalaureate college—the first school devoted to environmental studies.
Small New England colleges are facing economic headwinds, where some venerable institutions are closing their doors. Declining enrollment brought on my better-heeled and equipped colleges, has forced Sterling's closure.
