• The Godfather (1972)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola 🎥

- Michael is the youngest son of Vito Corleone, the head of New York’s most powerful crime family. He returns home from WWII as a decorated hero, and has plans of his own rather than joining the family business. However, Vito is put out of commission when a rival family attempts to take his life, and with the other Corleone siblings being unfit to lead, Michael reluctantly steps into his father’s place. As tensions grow amongst the family and between the rival clans, Michael quickly transforms from an inexperienced outsider into a ruthless leader.

❗️ NEW EPISODE AVAILABLE ❗️

• Blue Velvet (1986)
Directed by David Lynch

- While walking home from visiting his hospitalized father, college student Jeffrey Beaumont finds a severed human ear in a field. After bringing the ear to a local detective, he befriends the detective’s daughter and they begin an investigation of their own. While looking into a mysterious local nightclub singer, they quickly become intertwined in a dark conspiracy involving a deranged man named Frank and his group of psychopathic criminals.

After the passing of David Lynch earlier this year, we thought there was no better time than now to discuss one of his films again. This Hitchcock-ian thriller blends psychological horror with elements of noir, and showcases the themes and filmmaking techniques that Lynch would go on to explore on his later works lole Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. Blue Velvet divided critics upon its release for its dark themes and graphic sexuality, but has since been lauded as a classic and is considered of Lynch’s most iconic films.

Blue Velvet stars Kyle McLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern, and Dean Stockwell

❗️ OUR LATEST EPISODE❗️

🎥 Minari (2020)
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung

• Ambitious father Jacob Yi moves his Korean-American family from 1980’s California to rural Arkansas with the dream of starting a 50-acre farm growing produce from his home country. Their new life in the strange and rugged Ozarks comes with challenges - as marital struggles, financial disaster, cultural differences and their youngest son’s heart defect threatens their attempt at the American Dream. Can the resilience of family keep them together?

This semi-autobiographical film is a low stakes slice-of-life drama that revels in making the smallest parts of life feel monumental. Aided by gorgeous cinematography, and a beautiful score by Emile Mosseri, Minari is undeniably an optimistic highlight from what was a relatively slow year for film. It stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Youn Yuh-jung, and Will Patton.

Blow Out (1981)
Directed by Brian De Palma 🎥

• Jack Terri is an audio technician who works on sound effects for low-budget horror films. While out recording sound for a new movie, he witnesses a car careen off a bridge into a river. He jumps into the water and saves a woman named Sally, but finds that not only is the other passenger dead - it’s a U.S governor and upcoming presidential candidate. As Jack investigates the audio he captured of the accident (and begins a romance with Sally), he starts to unravel a political conspiracy that puts them both directly in the line of danger •

Blow Out is a mystery-thriller that also contains elements of noir, giallo (Italian horror) and meta-commentary on filmmaking. It was released in 1981 to critical acclaim but very little financial success, although it’s achieved cult-classic status since. Over the years it’s been praised for its stylish direction by De Palma (Carrie, Scarface), performances by John Travolta/Nancy Allen/John Lithgow, and is infamously one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite films.

Revisit our episode on Evil Dead 2 in time for Halloween season. This horror-comedy directed by Sam Raimi (original Spider-Man trilogy) features Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams in a hallucinatory experience being antagonized by demons during a very long night alone in an abandoned cabin in the woods. Its low budget, manic energy, practical effects, and inventive cinematography make it possibly one of the most iconic horror films of all time 🎃

🎶 Talking Heads - Remain in Light (1980)

• We’re FINALLY back after a long hiatus to talk about an album from the 1980’s for the first time. Talking Heads’ album ‘Remain in Light’ takes the groups brand of quirky post-punk, and merges it with new-wave, funk, electronics, and the polyrhythms of West African music. The band experimented with linear one-chord song structures, looping grooves, layered percussion, and the unhinged rants of vocalist David Byrne. It features the bands biggest hit ‘Once in a Lifetime’.
