College isn’t the only path to success—and for many people, it never was.

I’m grateful to have written this article for Pride Magazine Charlotte highlighting young men who are choosing skilled trades over years of college debt—and finding stability, purpose, and opportunity in the process.

Some are certified in as little as six months.
Many graduate debt-free.
Most walk straight into jobs that pay well and offer long-term growth.

This story isn’t anti-college.
It’s pro-choice, pro-access, and pro-real opportunity.

📖 Take a moment to read and reflect—and let’s talk:
👉 Would you encourage a young person in your life to consider the trades?

Ciera’ Harris is a teacher, entrepreneur, and advocate, dedicated to uplifting Black women and mothers through Black Girl Thriving and the Black Mama Collective.

✨ Black Girl Thriving – Founded in 2018, it started as a blog and evolved into a community-building platform for Black women, hosting over 60 events, including yoga classes and Mimosa Markets that support Black women-owned businesses.

🤱 The Black Mama Collective – After becoming a mother in 2022, Harris launched BMC to provide resources, support, and events for Black mothers, including access to lactation consultants, doulas, and Black OB-GYNs. Inspired by her own high-risk pregnancy and challenges with lupus, she is committed to improving Black maternal health outcomes.

🚀 Looking Ahead – In 2025, Harris plans to expand BMC’s events and relaunch its blog, while BGT will introduce BGT Books (an online bookstore) and BGT Yoga. One of the most anticipated events is the “Sis, You Smell Good” brunch and perfume swap on March 2.

Driven by service over profit, Harris continues to create safe, empowering spaces for Black women and mothers.

University City Partners is embarking on a new endeavor - the Small Business Initiative.

The Small Business Initiative is made possible by funding from the City of Charlotte, and was created with the intention of helping small businesses within University City with marketing and promotional efforts. It would provide essential resources needed to enhance their visibility and help their business to grow. While the initiative itself doesn't offer grants to these businesses, it assists in arranging guests speakers, gift card promotions, social media promotion, photography assistance and much more.

To learn more about this initiative and the guidelines for becoming a participating business, head to the full article here: https://issuu.com/watchdog-ent./docs/pm_0524_hr/30

While the city of Charlotte is experiencing rapid growth, there is an often overlooked epidemic of people experiencing homelessness on our city streets.

Thankfully, organizations like Hope Vibes Inc are striving to help. Hope Vibes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering the homeless and spreading hope throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. One of their most impactful and inspiring initiatives is the Hope Tank, which is a mobile outreach truck that provides necessary assistance to the homeless community, such as a shower, restroom, and laundry center. They recently received a call to assist 74 children that were experiencing homelessness in a local school and were being bullied due to being unclean.

Unfortunately, due to funding issues, the Hope Truck is no longer able to be on the streets of Charlotte, which is why Hope Vibes could use your help. They're launching their most ambitious campaign yet! To learn more about this organization and how you can help to get the Hope Tank back on the streets, head to the full article here: https://issuu.com/watchdog-ent./docs/pm_0124_hr/23

For the last 30 years, residents in the West Boulevard Corridor of West Charlotte have had no easy access to a grocery store. If residents don't have access to a car, it can take up to two different buses and half a day to get to Walmart and back, only to go back later in the week for additional groceries and household items. The lack of fresh, nutritious food has contributed to poor dietary habits, increased rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and a lower quality of life.

The West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition has partnered with local developers to create Three Sisters Market, a community-owned grocery store that is located right in the center of the neighborhood. Three Sisters will "provide fresh, healthy grocery amenities in a full-service arrangement, to provide good-paying jobs and to create community wealth", explains Rickey Hall, board chair of the West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition. They're also hoping to have a space for meetings and community activities.
