What was supposed to be a high alpine cutthroat adventure quickly turned into one of the wildest backpacking trips I’ve ever had. After trekking 7 miles in and another 1.5 miles up to a hidden lake sitting at 10,000 feet elevation, things took an unexpected turn.
First surprise? Our “cutthroat lake” was actually packed with tiger trout. Second surprise? A calm summer hike turned into a battle with hail, followed by a full-on blizzard in the high country. Snow, ice, wind—you name it, we got it.
This trip was a reminder that the mountains make their own rules. Come along as I share the journey, the unexpected catches, and how quickly things can change above tree line.
If you enjoy fishing, backpacking, or just seeing how unpredictable nature can get—this one’s for you.
