https://youtu.be/wdyFyvPGVLo?si=WIZrM82JbtUOx-yK Most anglers head to Nevada dreaming of battling the legendary monster Lahontan Cutthroat Trout of Pyramid Lake. Me? I had a different plan.

For the next stop in my Western Native Trout Challenge, I traded massive lakes for a tiny, brush-choked creek hidden in the high desert near Elko, Nevada. After miles of dusty roads, thick raparían trees, and plenty of crawling through tight stream corridors, I finally found what I came for—one of the smallest wild Lahontan Cutthroat Trout you could imagine.

Sometimes the greatest adventures aren’t measured in inches—they’re measured by the places they take you.

Join me as I explore Nevada’s rugged backcountry, learn about the biggest native cutthroat trout the west has to offer, and continue the journey to catch every native trout and char in the western United States.

If you enjoy native trout, conservation, fly fishing, and exploring wild places, be sure to subscribe and follow along as the challenge continues!

If you’ve ever stared at a lake map and thought, “Well… that’s a lot of squiggly lines,” this video is for you. In today’s breakdown, I teach you exactly how to read a topographical aquatic map for ice fishing so you can find fish before you ever drill a hole.

We go step-by-step through understanding contour lines, identifying drop-offs, points, humps, inside turns, and basins—and more importantly, how fish relate to each one throughout the winter season. Whether you’re targeting panfish over deep basins, walleye along transitions, trout near structure, or pike cruising flats, learning to interpret a map correctly will drastically improve your efficiency on the ice.

If you want to spend less time guessing and more time catching, this is a skill worth mastering.
