CONTRACTORS raised a utility pole into place with a new outdoor warning siren attached in Walter Bradley Park Friday, July 15. Woodford Emergency Management Director Drew Chandler said the siren replaces one at the Midway Fire Station that stopped working sometime after heavy storms last Dec. 10-11. Chandler said supply chain issues led to delays in the replacement siren's arrival, and when it did arrive, it was too heavy for the pole at the fire station. Chandler said the new siren will reach as many people, in part because the pole there is eight feet higher. More in this week's Woodford Sun. (Photo by Drew Chandler)

Extension Journalism for a small but lively town

The Midway Messenger is a mostly online publication for the small but very interesting town of Midway, Ky., between Lexington and the state capital of Frankfort. Most stories are written by students in the community journalism classes of Al Cross, extension professor at the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Media and director of its Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. The Messenger, founded in January 2008, has three goals: to give students real-world experience covering public affairs and other topics of interest in a community; to serve a community that has a strong streak of independence and once has its own newspaper; and to serve as an example of online community journalism. The Messenger publishes a print edition about twice a year.
